Read this newspaper online at www.basingstokeobserver Thursday March 11th - Wednesday March 17th, 2010 9 Have a say on Popley plans MORE than 1m will be spent in Popley as part of a major regeneration and improvement scheme. Plans to make it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists in north Popley residential estate and surrounding roads were put before residents this week. County councillor Jane Frankum, who also sits on the borough council with son Paul, spoke of her delight at the news after months of campaigning for improved safety initiatives. Cllr Jane Frankum told the Observer: It is something myself and Paul have been working to see for quite some time. "We were determined that something be done to get safe crossings across Popley, between the Popley Poets area and Marnell School. If Chineham Park Primary School does close, children will need safe crossings as well as at the new park to attend alternative schools. There is also the sheltered accommoda- tion with no proper crossing, so there is a real need for these improvements. It has taken a long time but we are talking about more than 1m spending, so it is no good doing a peacemeal job. We need residents to tell us if there is anything we have for- gotten, as this is for their benefit. Need for your gold. Cash? Instant cash Get a FREE, no obligation valuation in minutes, ALL GOLD BOUGHT IN ANY CONDITION Cllr Jane Frankum speaks to residents Cllr Mel Kendall, the county council s executive member for environment, said: We believe that this regeneration and improvement scheme will make is signifi- cantly easier to get around the estate and will make crossing Popley Way and Carpenters Down safer. Residents views will guide officers in the final development of the scheme and ensure that the plans best suit the needs of the people of Popley. Basingstoke Gold Bar Thieves steal car after hooking open door through letterbox A MERCEDES car was stolen in a raid on a Tadley property. Other items including a laptop and handbag were also taken from the home in Spiers Close after an implement was put through the letterbox to open the front door. The handbag was later found discarded in Reading Road, near to the Stoke Road junction. The incident occurred overnight on Monday last week, prompting an appeal from police. PC Ewan Gardner of Basingstoke Priority Crime Unit said: This burglary happened overnight in a residential area and we want to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area at the time. We also want to hear from any- one who may have seen the car being driven along Reading Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning. We would remind all residents of the importance of double-locking their doors. If the front door is double-locked from the inside, then it cannot be opened by put- ting an implement through the letterbox. Anyone with information about the theft should call Basingstoke police station on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity, anony- mously, on 0800 555 111. James made his plea after spending time with the group, which receives no funding from government or the national lottery fund. Relying entirely on charitable donations, the air ambulance saves hundreds of lives each year but costs 92,000 a month to run. James said: The outstanding work of the air ambulance scheme in recent years in saving people s lives and the extent to which we have come to rely upon it in times of emergency has made us all for- get the extent to which we need to dig deep in our own pockets and support the work they do. This is a deeply committed, highly pro- fessional team whose role in our local community is vital. We should do all that we can not just to raise the profile of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance but also to support directly the work that they do. Through charitable donations, we must secure the future of this key emergency service. Ask us for more details.
