A designated public places order came into force on Monday last week, giving police additional powers to deal with people consuming alcohol in public places. The areas covered include Chineham shopping centre, the Remembrance Gardens, New Binfields Sports Barn and various play areas. PC Jim Charlton of Chineham Safer Neighbourhoods Team said: The order provides police with a discretionary power to seize alcohol. The order will not be used in circumstances where families are enjoying picnics or in rela- Revisit your disco days STEP back to the 70s this month with an evening of disco heaven. We have worked closely with Basingstoke borough council to get the order put in place and we believe it will make a differ- ence to people living in Chineham and the surrounding areas. Council cabinet member for community safety Clive Sanders said: We need to stamp down on anti-social Share it with us at basingstokeobserver.co. behaviour so that we can all be free to enjoy peace in the place where we live. This DDPO was asked for by the local community. It follows on from those orders already in force in and around Basingstoke town cen- tre, Brighton Hill, Kingslcere, Oakley and Overton, where we have listened to the concerns of local people and taken the appropriate action. Basingstoke and Deane is a safe place to live and we will do whatever is necessary to keep it that way. For more information, visit www.hampshire.police.uk Test your wine knowledge Residents pick up advice WINE buffs can test their knowledge at a special event later this month. A what wine quiz takes place at Hatch Warren Community Centre on Saturday March 27. The fun evening allows teams to pit their palate against a panel of experts. The event begins at 7pm and tickets cost 10, which includes a cheese and pate supper with all quiz wine. For further information, call 01256 811262. Residents benefit from advice RESIDENTS with a borough housing association have attended a benefits awareness day. The event, held by Kingfisher Housing Association, provided residents with an opportunity to find out about finance, jobs and benefits that may be available. Following the success of a sim- ilar day last autumn, representa- tives from organisations includ- ing Basingstoke council and local citizens advice bureau were on hand to answer questions. Tenancy support officer Geoff Baker said: The event, held in Buckskin Community Centre, was the second of its kind for Kingfisher. The Buckskin event focused on helping people looking for work, as well as offering advice on benefits and pensions. Kingfisher HVHS residents seeking advice or tenancy sup- port should call Geoff Baker for an informal chat on 0800 988 4858. GOT AN OPINION? Police hunt after shopper is robbed A WOMAN was robbed in an Asda store car park in Basingstoke, prompting a police appeal for information. The theft happened in Brighton Hill at 12.35pm on Monday February 22. A 64-year-old woman shopper returning her trolley was approached by another woman, who spoke to her. As she returned to her car, she noticed a man walking away from her vehicle. She then realised her handbag in the car was open and three credit cards were missing. When she challenged the man, he threw two of the cards to the ground and ran off. The man and woman left in a blue vehicle. The woman was eastern European, aged in her 20s, 5ft tall, of average build and had dark hair and was wearing a dark coloured hat. The man was also eastern European, in his late 20s, 5ft 8ins tall, of stocky build and was wearing a light coloured hat. PC Dan Roberts of the Basingstoke Targeted Patrol Team said: We want to speak to anyone who has been a vic- tim of a similar incident. We would remind shoppers to keep hold of their belongings at all times and lock their vehicles when away from them. Anyone with information should call Basingstoke police on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. Homemade fare at market SILCHESTER village market returns next month. The pop- ular event, with the usual assortment of homemade bread, cakes, pies, meat pre- serves and more, will be held in Silchester village hall from 10am to noon on Saturday, April 3. Admittance and park- ing is free. WHO ARE AMBERWOOD? New Kids on the Block? No , Roy Ward and Dermot O Sullivan are probably the most experienced home improvement specialists in the Basingstoke and Tadley area. Embarrassingly for him, such is Roy s experience (and age) in conservatories that he is often referred to as Mr Conservatory and Dermot is not only known for his Gaelic charm but also manufactured and installed windows and doors some 25 years ago. For the last 12 years Roy and Dermot have managed the sales for Allstyle Windows who built up an enviable reputation for quality of installation and products. Recently AlIstyle withdrew from the home improvement market and so Dermot and Roy decided they were in the perfect situation to add Pvc home improvements to their range of high quality Timber windows and Doors already offered by Amberwood Designs. So what do Roy and Dermot have to offer the local purchaser of home improve- ments that isn t already out there? Roy Ward said: "During the last few weeks an Energy spokesman stated that Energy prices are likely to increase by a fur- ther 60 per cent in the next five years and whilst all home improvement companies could offer products that provide the maxi- mum insulation they often don t. For years Dermot and I have been promoting glazing that was far superior than anything offered locally because we felt it was in the best interests of the purchaser even though a lit- tle more expensive. The difference now is that everyone can offer as standard A rated maximum energy saving windows. Our difference is that as we have been using these type of products for years so we have a head start. However, did you know that there are no insulation standards for conservatories but because many are used as dining rooms and playrooms, for years we have been recom- mending high performance Tripleshield glaz- ing in conservatories as well as windows?" Dermot O Sullivan, "For years we have chosen to promote high energy saving Tripleshield glass units. As an ex installer of Pvc windows I also knew that the stronger the pvc window and door the longer it would last. I decided many years ago to offer totally steel reinforced sections because I knew that although we paid more for them and they took longer to fit, they were so much better than partly reinforced windows as required by British Standards. Our new A rated windows are totally reinforced with a recycled fibrous material that is both strong and with good insulation properties." So what is different about Amberwood? Its straight-forward really, just honest advice from two renowned experts in their field offering the highest quality Pvc and Timber products at the very best prices. The philosophy of Dermot and Roy is simple, if you offer the best advice, use the very best products, offer the very best prices, use the very best installers and keep your overheads low then the customer will be delighted and the company will prosper. Give a call to Roy or Dermot and you will receive Free advice, Free written quotations, No pressure and even a little Gaelic charm.
