The 24-year-old was rushed to Basingstoke and North Hampshire hospital following an assault in the early hours of Sunday. Her condition was this week described as stable. Detective Constable Katie Barry of Basingstoke CID said: Although this incident hap- pened in the early hours of the morning, we want to hear from anyone who saw anything sus- picious. We believe this was a tar- geted assault and not a random attack, and we would ask any- one with information to contact us as soon as possible. Anyone with information about the incident should call Det Con Barry at Basingstoke police station on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity, anony- mously, on 0800 555 111. POLICE have begun volun- tary DNA swabbing in an attempt to find the brutal killer of a pensioner. Georgina Edmonds was tor- tured and stabbed repeatedly with a kitchen knife in her Brambridge home more than two years ago. Officers have been unable to locate her killer but have identi- fied almost 2,000 people whose DNA will be compared to the DNA evidence found at the crime scene. They have been invited to attend a social club in Eastleigh this week and again on Saturday to help with the investigation. NEWS BITES Your Observer on Twitter PLEASE note that the Basingstoke Observer now goes by another name on social networking site Twitter. We would like to thank all readers who follow us on the service but we can now be found at BasingstokeNews. Join up at www.twitter.com and follow us for up-to-the- minute news across the bor- ough. BY SIMON MOSS s.mossbasingstokeobser Detective Chief Inspector Paul Barton said: We are taking vol- untary DNA samples from a large number of people to assist in identifying Mrs Edmonds killer. These people are not sus- pected of committing this crime but as the offender remains at large we must take these sam- ples and compare them to the DNA of the killer. This will help to eliminate large numbers of people from the inquiry. Only those who receive a letter from the police should attend to give their voluntary DNA sample. As always, we continue to appeal to anyone with any infor- mation to get in touch with us and help us find the person responsible for this horrific crime. A 30,000 reward is still avail- able and the smallest bit of infor- mation could lead us to the killer. Anyone with information about the killing should call Hampshire police, quoting Operation Columbian, on 101 or call the Crimestoppers charity, anony- mously, on 0800 555 111.
