www.basingstokeobserver Thursday March 11th - Wednesday March 17th, 2010 39 Sport DISS-PATCHED Stoke fight-back turns the tables on visitors to grab well-earned bonus BASINGSTOKE fought back bravely to take the points in an entertaining 37-22 win at home to Diss. The Dragons found themselves trailing 17-3 with a minute left in the first half before scoring on half time and running in four sec- ond-half tries. It was not until the 64th minute that the home side found themselves in front before finishing the game off and get- ting a bonus point in the process. Stoke started poorly, giving away too many penalties, and were punished on seven minutes with a penalty after sloppy play by Stoke at the scrum. The home side then had a good spell of pressure in their oppo- nents 22 but too many errors stopped them from scoring before they were awarded a penalty 15 metres out for Mike Goodall to level the score at 3-3 on 12 minutes. The game became something of a midfield battle, with both sides being warned by the ref for minor skirmishes and the visi- tors playing to their strengths and keeping the ball among their forwards with several driving mauls. After seeing a man sent to the sin bin, Stoke were soon pun- ished. Diss made the home side pay by scoring two tries against their wounded opponents. Indeed, Diss found themselves a man down and this time it was the home side that took advantage. With the last move of the first half, after several phases, it was Sam Harding who emerged 10 metres out with ball in hand to bludgeon his way to the line for the try. A Goodall conversion left the home side trailing 17-10 at the break. The start of the second half saw both sides miss a penalty each, Stoke on 42 and Diss on 45, before any pattern materialised. It was to be the home side who were to take control of the game and run in three tries in 12 min- utes after a rampaging run of 25 metres by Simon Lovegrove, with players hanging on to him, galvanised the team into a period of sustained pressure. Reducing the deficit to just two points, the home side wasted lit- tle time in taking the lead. Diss were penalised for holding on and Goodall slotted the long- range effort from in front to give Stoke the lead for the first time 18-17. A minute later, Stoke won the ball against the head in a scrum on the half way line. They spun the ball wide for Fitchett to make the break and after being tackled the ball was re-cycled Goodall added the extras and Stoke now led 25-17. A further try saw Stoke extend their lead to 30-17 but Diss bat- tled away with their rolling mauls and got themselves back into the game on 68 minutes. Their forwards made ground the Stoke defence and run to the line for an unconverted try and reduce the deficit to 30-22. Stoke then settled down and looked to expose the Diss defence out wide. On one such occasion, Mark Flower showed his pace with a 30m run only to A Diss clearance kick was fielded by Sam Harding on the half way. He fed the ball to Fitchett, who then made his cus- tomary 40m searing break before finding support on the inside in the form of Paul Morris. He fed to Rory Greenslade-Jones to score quickly and spun wide the other with several pick and drives be nudged into touch on the 22. and a Goodall conversion ended We didnt follow on from our second-half performance of last week and took time to get into our game plan. Once we had a pattern to our play, we did well. The positive is that we did fin- ish strong but must play like that for 80 minutes and not 40. Bison hot streak runs cold Town suffer crushing defeat RUNAWAY league leaders Newport County gave Basingstoke Town a mauling at The Camrose in their mid- week clash. The Welsh side left the bor- ough with a 5-1 victory and three more points in their faultless charge towards the Blue Square South title. A Danny Rose brace and one from Stuart Douglas saw the visitors gain a three goal advantage but a Robert Rice penalty reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time. But that was as good as it got for the desperate Dragons as Sam Foley made it four just min- utes after the restart. Martyn Giles added a fifth to complete a bad night for Frank Grays side. FANS at Planet Ice had for- gotten what home defeat felt like after 12 straight home wins but visiting Slough Jets stole the points to break Basingstoke Bisons hot streak. A 4-2 win was harsh on Steve Morias Herd, though, who fought to defend their incredible run on home ice. Brothers Adam and Joe Greener hit the back of the net while Slava Koulikov also netted. Ondrej Lauko made the response for Bison to take his tally to 50 for the season. Bison opened the scoring through Tom Long but the visitors were soon level, courtesy of Koulikov. Peter Poljacek then edged Jets in front at the end of the first period. After the restart, Jets doubled their advantage but good link-up play saw Lauko blast in the Bisons second of the day. But Jets had the last laugh as Adam Greener restored the two goal cush- ion and ended Bisons dream run. Earlier in the week, Bison had seen off Milton Keynes Lightning after edging their midweek clash 3-2. Ollie Bronnimann and Tom Annetts were among the Bison scorers, who needed extra time to see off their spirited opponents.
