Ridgeway Community Centre is celebrating its 10th birthday this spring. And to mark the occasion a Buckskin community open day is taking place at the venue in Blackdown Close on Saturday March 20. Clubs and groups based at the centre will be represented at the celebration. The Ridgeway Centre has drifted in recent years, accord- ing to Cllr Taylor, who is aiming to make it bigger and better than ever. Cllr Taylor, interim chairman of the centre management group, told the Observer: I think it is fair to say that it has drifted through the last two or three years. It hasnt fulfilled its potential, so we have got hold of it by the scruff of the neck with new ini- tiatives. We want to relaunch the centre as the hub of the community here in Buckskin to make it what it was always intended to be. We know from anti-social behaviour that young people are drifting around with little to do, so we want the centre to be a NEWS BITES Bowl along to open day RESIDENTS in Basingstoke looking to take up a new sport should get along to an open day later this month. Among the attractions at the birthday bash will be a face- painter, balloon artist, refresh- ments and performances from some of the groups that run at the centre. Centre coordinator Dee OSullivan said: This is a very good thing. More people than ever will be able to come and enjoy the range of activities that we put on here. Members of Buckskin and Worting Community Association will attend the cele- bration along with volunteers and the community develop- ment officer to talk about initia- tives being planned to make Buckskin an even better place to in which to live. Man commits indecent act in front of girl, 12 A 12-YEAR-OLD girl has been left traumatised after a man committed an indecent act in front of her. At around 2.45pm on Monday last week, the youngster was walking home from school towards the Brighton Hill round- about in Basingstoke when she was approached by a man. The girl recognised the man as someone she had seen before while walking home. The man called out to the girl and when she turned round she saw him commit an indecent act. The man was white, around 17 years old, of muscular build, 5ft 4ins tall and had short brown hair. He was wearing a blue track- suit and flat cap. PC Tracy West of the Basingstoke Targeted Patrol Team said: We would appeal to anyone who recognises the description to come forward and contact us. The victim has been highly traumatised by this incident and should not have been exposed to this kind of unacceptable behav- iour. We want to identify this man so there are no further inci- dents. We would remind people to contact us if they see any suspi- cious activity. Anyone with information about the incident should call PC West at Basingstoke police station on 101 or the Crimestoppers char- ity, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
