According to Waterwise (an organisation focused on decreasing water consumption in the UK), the south east of has less water available per person that Sudan and Syria and faces droughts on a regular basis. South East Water, which serves most of the borough, is producing a plan for a range solutions to deliver the extra water needed in the region. Cllr Reid added: The govern- ment says it is doing this partly because the company has no plan in place to reduce water consumption. The government knows that it has to ration water to achieve its high growth rates rationing is the first step and it is coming. Being forced to build almost 1,000 homes a year is bound to put pressures on our essential infrastructures. It s not just the fresh water supply that s at risk here. The River Loddon downstream of Basingstoke Sewage works is already being over-polluted by phosphates. We have to fight the government s planning num- bers. They mean not just water rationing and polluted rivers but also green fields lost and grid- lock on our roads. Southern Water said: Typically, water use increases in the sum- mer for a number of reasons, including for gardening, and the tariff takes that into account. We would ask customers to be mindful about the amount of water they use both in the gar- den and in the home. BASINGSTOKE could face water rationing, according to a borough councillor. Encouraging fall in cigarette sales to underage customers CIGARETTE sales to under- age youngsters in Hampshire have fallen, according to county council figures. The statistics, released to mark No Smoking Day, shows that one in 10 outlets sells to minors, down from one in four. Since 2008, it has been illegal to sell tobacco to anyone under the age of 18, with a maximum fine of 2,500 for doing so. County council leader Ken Thornber said: It s very encouraging that sales have reduced from one in four stores across Hampshire last year to fewer than one in ten. However, there is still work to be done to bring this figure down to zero. Businesses selling ciga- rettes have a duty to help pre- vent underage smoking, and, although their frontline shop staff may have been trained and updated on the law in real- ity, it appears that some are still thinking cigarettes are a 16-year-olds product. Anyone who suspects ciga- rettes are being sold to under- age customers are urged to call Hampshire Trading Standards on 01962 833620 or underage.saleshants.go Ruffled your feathers? Milestones Museum in Basingstoke Leisure Park saw an increase in attendances of 10 per cent in February compared to the same time last year. During the school half term, the attraction enjoyed average visitor numbers of 700 a day, and by the end of the week had more than 6,000 visi- tors, compared to 2,655 during the February half-term in 2003. Hampshire County Council s culture chief, Cllr Margaret Snaith-Tempia, said: Milestones Museum provides a fascinating insight into the history of how we used to live and can be enjoyed by young and old throughout. There is a sense of nostalgia and fun at every turn and I am not surprised that the museum is proving such a popular attraction.
