Read this newspaper online at www.basingstokeobserver Thursday March 11th - Wednesday March 17th, 2010 15 Green Matters! with Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment Cllr Elaine Still NEWS BITES Fulfil the growing potential of your garden waste WITH March now here and the peak growing season officially under way now is the perfect time to think about signing up to the bor- oughs green garden waste service. For 28, residents who sign up to the council scheme receive 19 green garden waste collections from March through to December. Everything collected in the green garden waste bags is composted locally to produce bags of Pro-Grow, high qual- ity organic soil conditioner to help gardens grow. Last year, 3,995 people in the borough joined the scheme, sending an impres- sive 950 tonnes of garden waste for composting. This service is not only environmentally friendly but it is also a very convenient way to recycle your garden waste. For more information or to sign up visit www.bas- ingstoke. gov.uk/go/green- waste or call 01256 844844. Fruitful outcome to work at Old Orchard THIS month were turning our attentions to the Kempshott Conservation Group more specifically the work currently happening at Old Orchard, Kendal Gardens in kempshott. The Old Orchard is a fragment of a bygone Basingstoke, a reminder of a time when the area was made up of chicken farms and other small holdings. It is not widely known except to local residents. Approached on foot is an area of mature trees, comprising apple, pear, damson and bullace, walnut, hazel, oak, horse chestnut and hawthorn. In 2006, the Kempshott Conservation Group, with sup- port from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, took over the conservation manage- ment of this and two other sites in Kempshott. One of the first things we did was plant a new community orchard with plums, greengage, quince, apples, pears and med- lars. In autumn 2008, we planted three more sponsored fruit trees and a sweet chestnut. Today (Thursday) at 2pm, we will be processing the coppice into bean poles and pea sticks. If you want to help us or see what is involved, you will be more than welcome to come along. Tools will be provided but please bring gloves! The nearest parking is across Pack Lane in Stratton Park. You can contact the group at kempshott-conservetisc co.uk.
