The event is being held at the Gill Nethercott Centre on Saturday March 29 from 10am to 4pm. The fair launches Whitchurch Green Week, with demonstrations, displays and workshops on topics such as energy con- sumption, sustainable food and transport. For more infor- mation, call 01256 892650. Births survey BASINGSTOKE hospital has the lowest caesarean section birth rate in the region, according to recently pub- lished statistics. BirthChoice UK.com reports that the Aldermaston Road facility delivered 2,800 new babies last year, with just 20.3 per cent by caesarean section. To find out more information about maternity care in the town, visit www.northhamp shire.nhs.uk RESIDENTS in Basingstokes more rural areas wait longer for ambulances than those in urban areas, a report says. The delays were highlighted by Hampshire County Council in a review of South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) car- ried out over four months recently. The contrast in attendance times is blamed on the Ambulance service striving to meet national target response BY NAOMI SMITH s.mossbasingstokeobser times and operating in a two-tier system. A shortage of qualified para- medics has also been blamed. The review heard evidence from a wide range of people, including the public, NHS man- agers and ambulance staff. Cllr Anna McNair Scott, chair- man of Hampshire County Council s health overview and scrutiny committee and vice- chairwoman of the joint review group, said: Ambulance services are a vital component of the NHS. They are quite rightly, highly valued by the public. That is why it is essential that the commissioners work with the ambulance service to ensure it is better placed to meet the needs of all residents living in the south central area. Our review has found that an Charities benefit from AWE fundraising STAFF at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Aldermaston raised more than 14,000 for charity last year. The money has been shared equally between Basingstoke Advocacy Scheme (BAS) and Bliss, the national baby care charity. Employees on the AWE grad- uate programme coordinated the company s support on a local and national level. John Duckinson, chairman of trustees at BAS, said: I know I speak for everyone on the board and advocacy team in saying that the amount raised last year was stunning. We have never had such a large cheque donation and we are really excited by it. To receive an unexpected 7,211.85 is simply amazing. AWE s Robin McGill, left, hands over a cheque to James Edmonton from Bliss, watched by Paul Harrison, Scott Richardson, Richard Williams, Iain Millerm Mark Hall and Matthew Ma Scott Richardson of the grad- uate charities project said: Yet again, the people of AWE have been fantastically generous. Funds were raised from a number of activities, from fun runs and cake sales to a battle of the bands competition. We even attempted to raise the weight of the executive team in spare change. We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to raise an appreciable sum of money for Bliss and BAS and hope our contribution has a positive impact on the lives of the people that these charities support. Free for mums MUMS will get free entry to a Basingstoke museum on Mothers Day. Visitors to Milestones Museum on Sunday March 14 will also receive 50p off a cream tea in the newly refurbished 50s- style café as well as 10 per cent off items on sale in the gift shop. Museum tickets can be pre-booked on 01256 477766. emphasis on fixed standard response times, regardless of patient outcomes, encourages the ambulance service to concen- trate on achieving rapid response times in urban areas that mask under-performing in rural ones. Cllr McNair Scott added There was some evidence to suggest it is often the nearest local vehicle rather than the most appropri- ately qualified crew which is deployed to attend a patient. The secretary of state for health is now calling for a review on national targets to ensure they reflect the entire patient experience, not just initial response times to emergency call-outs. The NHS issued a statement saying it was aware of concerns about rural response times and had been working with south cen- tral ambulance services to intro- duce a range of measures to improve response times in rural areas. We are confident that there has been an improvement in recent months and overall per- formance by the service has improved by 23 per cent since 2007 50 per cent in rural areas, said the statement. A BOROUGH group is hop- ing to double its number of volunteers after securing additional funding this year. Basingstoke and District Cats Protection received 23,000 in last year from fundraising and donations, on top of 16,500 in bequeaths in 2008. As a result, a free cat neu- tering campaign was launched allowing the char- ity to work at maximum capacity. Charity founder Andrea Shepherd said: The more cats we help the more we get. We are looking for all types of volunteers to help with abandoned and rescued cats, particularly indoor fosterers to house pregnant cats and their kittens and outdoor fos- terers who can house them in garden pens, with all expenses paid by the charity. When the charity was first set up in 1991, we were just a handful of Tadley-based vol- unteers but we have been growing at a staggering rate. To learn more about the charity, you can visit its spring fair at the Ambrose Allen Centre from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Saturday or visit www.basingstoke.cats.or or call 01256 346743.
