Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has held a pub- lic consultation over plans for land to the north of the train sta- tion, with various options being put forward, including a neigh- bourhood park or a mix of afford- able and private houses. South View, an area including Vyne Road car park and former allotments adjacent to Lyford Green, has been earmarked for homes. But with a total of six potential development sites in the ward that could see it swell by 2,000 homes, residents have decided to take action against what they see as over-development. Ward councillors Laura James, Paul Harvey and George Hood held a meeting of their own on Friday to gauge the views of resi- dents in the area. The meeting led to Norden Action Group being launched. We held a very productive pub- SPACE WARS BY SIMON MOSS s.mossbasingstokeobser lic meeting, Cllr James told the Observer. It was the birth of the Norden Action Group as the feel- ing among the residents was unanimous that they want to be able to shape the future of their community. We are not anti-development this is about the right develop- ment in the right place without sacrificing what little green space we have here in Norden. LemonLands proposals for the Eli Lilly site is another major development threat to Norden, along with plans for Gresley Road, Upton Crescent and the Old Vyne School playing fields. Speaking at this weeks public consultation on Basingstoke councils plans for South View, cabinet member for property and finance Cllr James Lewin accepted that residents were concerned about the impact of proposed development in the area. The council hopes to move for- ward with the plans for South Share it with us at basingstokeobserver.co. Councillors Paul Harvey, left, Laura James and George Hood held their own meeting with residents View by July as the land has been allocated for future housing. But neighbouring landowners, including Network Rail and pri- vate landowners, are also keen to develop the site, leading to con- cern over the lack of a joined-up approach to the site. Cllr Lewin said: As portfolio holder, this is an important site for Basingstoke and I am deter- mined to get it right. This devel- opment will be attractive, consis- tent with the rest of Norden and of a sufficient style that other landowners will be minded to fol- low. I am very open minded on the future of this development. But Cllr James said there should not be such a rush to build on the site. Yes, this site is allocated for housing but the funds have not been included in the budget for the next three years there should not be this frantic race.
