Originally launched in London in 2003, the street pastors scheme will see volunteers from churches across Oxford lending a helping Abusive 999 caller jailed A BICESTER woman has been sentenced to 56 days in prison for persistently making nuisance calls to emergency services. Leslie Shields of Wadham Close was sentenced at Bicester Magistrates Court last Thursday. The court heard the 44-year- old was making abusive 999 calls as many as five times a night for a number of months Sgt Adrian Thomas from Bicester neighbourhood team said: I hope this punishment sends out a strong warning to people that this type of per- sistent abuse of the 999 serv- ice will not be tolerated. The 999 call system is there to be used in an emergency. For months, our staff have endured a stream of abusive and drunken calls from this woman, none of which were appropriate and stopped legitimate callers from getting through. I am pleased that the court has recognised the impact that her actions have had. REPORT BY Holly Welham newsyouroxfordshire.co hand and a listening ear to people who may have had one too many or who may be vulnerable for some other reason on the city centre streets at night. There are now more than 1,000 street pastors at work in the UK, including a team in Wantage & Grove, and from June they will include the Oxford team, who will be out and about every Friday night. Revd Kathryn Bracewell from the New Road Baptiste Church is helping to introduce the Gymnastics centres flippin brilliant GYMNASTS in Abingdon are jumping for joy after celebrat- ing a successful first year in their new home. Abingdon Gymastics Club moved into a specially adapted building at Berinsfield Gymnastic Centre in February last year and has gone from strength to strength, winning medals at several regional com- petitions and being named a runner-up for club of the year in the Oxfordshire Sports Awards. The club has more than 220 girls and boys from the age of three to 16 as members and a team of 20 coaches at the club, led by new head coach Nikki Woodward. Club chairman, Neil Moulster, said: It has been a great first year. Having a building that has been specially adapted for use as a gymnastics centre, with the flooring and the equipment we need, has made a huge dif- ference. John Cotton, councillor for Berinsfield and Dorchester, said: This is a fantastic facility, Gymnasts are celebrating a year of success in Berinsfield not just for Berinsfield, but the whole of Oxfordshire. Together with the flourishing boxing gym in the village, Berinsfield is fast becoming a hub of sporting excellence for our region. Landlords Jennings got Vale of White Horse District Council to agree to change the use of the building at the Tower Road Industrial Estate from indus- trial to leisure for the move to go ahead. Jennings director Paul Mabbutt, said: Supporting the gym club is one of the commit- ments we ve made as a busi- ness to invest in our local com- munities. Having the gym club here has really given the build- ing a new lease of life and it s been great to see. scheme in the city. She said: It s about forming individual relationships with peo- ple by lending a listening ear, and protecting the vulnerable. It s a chance to have a real meeting point with young people on their territory. People have been very enthu- siastic about volunteering. So far, we have 15 members and are waiting for the confirmation of another 15. The teams of four work until the early hours of the morning and offer practical support to people, including giving flip-flops to girls walking barefoot because of uncomfortable shoes and space blankets to people who are feeling the cold. They also carry a first aid kit, a dustpan and brush to sweep up broken glass and work with the police to spot problems and diffuse aggressive situations before they escalate. The pastors keep a record of everything that has occurred, which they pass on to the next group that is going out. This helps them to follow up cases where people have been referred to alcohol and drug addiction programmes. Information is shared between teams so that they can spot recurrent prob- lems that are emerging. Revd Neil Townsend, pastor of Wantage Community Church, has worked as a street pastor in Wantage and Grove for four months after having helped set up the project in October 2009. The main role we play is to be there for people by being out, walking, talking and listening, he said. We have received an extremely positive response from people. They ask to write comments on our record sheet like you guys are angels . Our work is about how you can improve a person s night through love and compassion. The local police force has also reported that there has been a reduction in crime in the area. Our volunteers are mainly aged 30 to 50 and we have two ladies in their 70s. The best street pastors are grannies because everyone knows they are safe. The volunteers receive 50 hours training, part of which is from the police, to ensure they are prepared for the issues they will face. They receive no train- ing in physical self-protection but since the scheme started not one person has been hurt. I have never felt scared, said Neil. Oxford Nightsafe, a partner- ship set up to tackle alcohol- related anti-social behaviour in Oxford city centre and east Oxford, received 4,000 to fund the project. Karen Crossan from Oxford Nightsafe said: This is a wel- come addition to the work the Nightsafe Partnership are doing and will provide another form of help for vulnerable people. Patients voice A GROUP that speaks out on behalf of patients in Oxfordshire has changed its name. Patient Voice is an inde- pendent body made up of members of the public living in the county with a wide knowledge or experience of the NHS. The group was formerly called the Patient Focus Group and before that the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Patient and Public Involvement Forum. Got an opinion?
