6 Thursday March 4th - Wednesday March 10th, 2010 Read this newspaper online at www.oxfordjournal.co.uk NEWS BITES Homes watch CHERWELL District Council has adopted a new strategy to improve private housing in the district. The Private Sector Housing Strategy aims to make sure homes in Cherwell are of good quality and that no one has to live in unsatisfactory accommodation. Cherwell District Council s portfolio holder for planning and housing, Cllr Michael Gibbard, said: "This strategy gives the council a clear, pos- itive direction. It will result in housing improvements within existing resources at a time of financial stringency. Ex-disco diva Fabia scents new success A HOUSEWIFE and former disco-dancing champion from Oxford who shocked the nation with a raunchy striptease rou- tine on Britain s Got Talent has launched a business to pamper people s skin, not expose it. Fabia Cerra, from Blackbird Leys, hit the headlines in 2009 when she stripped down to her lingerie in front of a TV audience of millions. But she has now turned her back on burlesque dancing to start her own perfume and skin- care range. Called Fabia Cosmetics, the qualified perfumer and beauti- cian has overcome a difficult childhood and being diagnosed as bi-polar in 2003 to develop her own fragrance. It was such a relief to be told what was wrong with me, said the 35-year-old. I d become caught up in so many stupid things alcohol, drugs, an affair REPORT BY Holly Welham newsyouroxfordshire.co with my cousin. I am determined to make up for the 13 years of my life I lost. When I had my son, Leome, five years ago, I nearly lost my life. I was ill for eight weeks after my c-section with a flesh eating bug. I thought, I ve been given a second chance and I need to use it. Before, I d had no confidence, self-belief or respect but I started to get stronger and stronger. I am determined to have a better life for my son and I. Everyone who has tried out the perfume likes it. The next step is to secure some funding so that I can put in a bulk order and start selling it. It may take me more than one application and I m prepared to try several avenues. The firm invited staff and other companies based at Oxford Business Park to raise money by wearing red to work to help fight the UK s biggest killer heart and circulatory disease. Jim Johnston, CEO of UK Business Parks at Goodman, said: This initiative allowed us to do this by joining forces with our occupiers to raise money for the British Heart Foundation s vital work. OAP forums AGE Concern Oxfordshire is holding a series of forums around the county next month on the subject, Growing Older in Oxfordshire. The events are aimed at older people, their carers and other people who work with the elderly and aim to provide facts and figures about grow- ing older and get people s feedback. The outcome of the forums will form part of an Age Concern report, Growing Older in Oxfordshire, due to be published in June, which aims to influence policy and practice into the future. The body of Lisa Ruth Consterdine, 48, of Purslane Drive, was found by police after they were called to the home at 1.24am. Sean Freaney, 50, also of Purslane Drive, was arrested and taken to Banbury police station. He was remanded to appear at Banbury Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday) as the Journal went to press. Det Supt Rob Mason said: We are at a very early stage in our investigation at this point and so we do not want to speculate on the specifics of the incident at this time but will look to make more information available. The man is believed to be the victim s boyfriend. Police have said they do not believe anyone else was involved in the incident. Sports Relief gets on track GREYHOUNDS, kennel hands, trainers and staff from Oxford Greyhound Stadium will be going the extra mile for Sport Relief on Friday March 19. Following the day s racing, dogs will be joined by stadium staff to walk their very own Sport Relief mile around the track. Six of the dogs will also model new Sport-Relief racing jackets, donated by resident bookmaker Richard Dunn. Maureen Ridley, general manager of Oxford Greyhound Stadium, said: Greyhound racing is one of the most popular spectator sports in the coun- try, and this special charity event will give us a fantastic opportunity to bring everyone together while raising money for what is a very worthy cause. Race-goers at our regular Thursday evening meetings will be invited to sponsor the Sport Relief Mile in advance, and members of staff, own- ers and trainers have all committed to making donations to support the event.
