Viridor Waste Management applied for an environmental per- mit in February last year but has been told to supply more details on the proposed plant s impact on air quality, human health, local wildlife and further details on drainage. The site at Ardley Quarry was chosen by Oxfordshire County Council as its preferred scheme to deal with the county s non-recy- clable waste last year but council- lors refused to grant the plant NEWS BITES Budding writer AN OXFORD High School pupil has fought off competi- tion from 3,000 other young writers across England to have her story printed as part of World Book Day today (Thursday). Pandora Dewan, 13, won the Evans Schools Short Story Competition and will have her work published with 28 other talented young writ- ers in an anthology called The Escape of Hanna Schmidt. Stewart Ross, who helped judge the competition, said: Three years ago, when I first selected stories for this book, I was amazed at the quality of the entries. Not any more. I now know from past experi- ence and from visiting dozens of schools all over Britain and further afield that the pool of young talent is deep, wide and wonderfully rich. REPORT BY Ric Sumner newsyouroxfordshire.co planning permission. The company has appealed against the decision and there will be a public inquiry later this year. The Environment Agency said it had consulted widely on the details of the environmental per- mit application before asking Viridor for more information. Environment Agency area man- ager Simon Hughes said: We are really pleased with the involve- ment of individual members of the public and local groups. It is clear that there is a good deal of inter- est in these proposals within the Pop star to barbie doll OXFORDSHIRE is now the home of a new unique cooking school that is already drawing stars through the doors. When the Weber Grill Academy opened its doors in February in March Baldon, south of Oxford, pop star Sophie Ellis Bextor, left, was one of the first to try her hand at improving her barbecue and grilling skills. The UK s first dedicated barbe- cue cookery school, the venue offers BBQ fans the chance to test out their skills under the eye s of Weber s highly-skilled tutors, versed in a variety of dif- ferent styles of barbie cooking, both indoors and out. The academy will be opening its doors to the public in August, and Weber s UK managing director John Cooper said: The Grill Academy isn t about burgers and sausages. It s about introducing people to really excellent barbecue cookery, teaching the different barbecuing techniques and encouraging them to try some- thing different. To book a place at The Weber Grill Academy, call 01756 692600 or visit www.weberbbq.co.uk local community. We have been speaking to and meeting as many of them as possible to explain our role in this process and to listen to their views. The Agency has asked Viridor to re-asses the proposed plant s short-term impact on air quality and said it would consider the company s application again when it had received the extra information. Residents in Ardley and Fewcott and the surrounding villages have vowed to fight any plans for an incinerator. If given the go-ahead, the incinerator would generate electricity from up to 300,000 tonnes of refuse each year. Mr Hughes said: We have asked the applicant to submit fur- ther information as the applica- tion was lacking in detail in a number of areas. Some of these areas had been raised by local communities through the meet- ings we have held with them and in representations made during consultation. Local people have an impor- tant role to play in these propos- als, and we will continue to involve the public throughout the deter- mination of this application. We will make sure that if any plant is built it will meet high envi- ronmental standards and will be operated safely. Store donation A NEW Tesco Express store in Botley, Oxford, celebrated its launch with a donation to The Gatehouse. Store manager Chris Gilleard handed over a cheque for 500 to Gatehouse project director Andrew Smith at the store opening last month. The charity provides food, shelter and company to Oxford s homeless and poorly housed population from its building in St Michael s Street Andrew said: I would like to thank Tesco for the kind donation. The money will be used to buy food for those people who need it the most, and, as we spend approxi- mately 1,000 a month on food, the 500 donation will be a considerable help. Got an opinion?
