www.oxfordjournal.co.uk Thursday March 4th - Wednesday March 10th, 2010 47 Sport Will Bratt in action in Bahrain Picture courtesy of GP2 Series Media Service Heavenly intervention OXFORD City boss Mike Ford could be forgiven for offering a silent prayer of thanks after his injury-decimated squad s home fixture against Nuneaton was called off. A pitch inspection at Court Place Farm saw the surface deemed unplayable after torren- tial rain and boss Ford said: The treatment room on Tuesday evening was more like the local A&E on a Saturday night broken jaws, bad backs, sore groins and stiff shoulders. It has been a long week trying to get players in, trying to get players fit and trying to reas- sure the players they are still good ones. This period has been the most difficult I have known but we will come through it bet- ter for the experience and stronger for the run into the seasons end. On-loan Watford goalie Jonathan North caught the eye in City s last game, a 2-0 defeat at Cambridge, with a string of fabulous saves and Ford praised the stopper, saying: Up to this point of his loan, he has had very little to do in most games but when called upon last weekend he made some stunning saves. Jon s saves and a fantastic work ethic almost got us a point but we switched off when all the hard work had been done and when you play against good teams you will get punished. The players were very down on the way home but they should remember over the course of the season they have been fantastic. I just think that at the moment the injuries and lack of players and experience is starting to catch up with us SPORT SHORTS Riding high TWO junior Oxfordshire riders have qualified to take part in the British Open Show Jumping Championships at Birmingham NEC in April. Timothy Wilks from Henley will take part in the John Whitaker International JA Championship, while Aimee Measor from Abingdon has qualified for the British Showjumping Business Partnership Winter Grade C Riding Belle Fleur. Stars shine A RAMPANT Oxford City Stars put nine past Haringey in a goal-fest at Alexandra Palace. Andy Cox opened the scor- ing for the visitors after just 30 seconds, with goals from Richard Wojciak, Darren Elliott and player-coach Ken Forshee following in the first period. Alan Green and a second for Elliott continued the Stars dominance after the break as they consolidated their fifth place in the league, with Shannon Taylor, Cox and Dax Hedges rounding off the scoring for a stylish victory. Between the sticks, James Skaife had a fine game, mak- ing 22 saves in a goalless shut-out. with a lot of the younger ones in need of a rest. People talk about having a small squad, in fact, the size of the squad is fine it s just that most of them have been unavail- able. S h u n t b l i g h t s B r a t t s p r o m i s i n g r a c e d e b u t SPORT SHORT Unlucky Hawks OXFORD Hawks Ladies suf- fered a 2-1 defeat to high-fly- ing Reading, despite perhaps their best performance of the season. Kathryn Poulter put away her first goal of the season for the Hawks after just five minutes as the visitors made a strong and composed start to the game, taking a ball from the left on the edge of the D to beat her marker and slot home. The Hawks were unlucky to concede an equaliser shortly before half-time from a short corner and came out res- olutely in the second half, only to be frustrated by the woodwork, hitting the post twice in the first 10 minutes. Second-placed Reading made them pay for their misses, a deflection off a short corner putting them 2-1 ahead. Despite a driving per- formance from Hetti Murray in midfield, it wasn t to be for the Hawks, who were unable to find a second goal despite dominating possession. WILL BRATT continued his promising start to the GP2 Asia series at the Bahrain International Circuit, posting a top 20 finish in his race debut. The Banbury racer came 16th on his first outing at the Sakhir track during a highly competitive fifth round of the campaign on Friday but had no such luck 24 hours later when he was shunted off the track in round six of the event. Driving for the Party Poker Racing.com Scuderia Coloni team, the 21-year-old made an outstanding start to the 34-lap race from the 10th row of the grid on Friday, scything his way into 15th position. He weathered a more difficult mid-race period to produce a strong final third of the race where his pace was comparable to the quickest cars on track. The Euroseries 3000 and Italian Formula 3000 champion was knocked out of Saturday s race on the sixth lap after a strong start. Holding 12th place, Bratt s race came to an untimely end when American Alexander Rossi ploughed into the back of his Renault-powered Dallara going into turn one MOTORSPORT BY Ric Sumner newsyouroxfordshire.co Unsurprisingly disappointed with the outcome to round six, Will said: Clearly, I m not happy with how my race ended. I d moved up the order four positions in just the first two laps and everything was well set for a good run. The crucial thing was that I d been careful with my rear tyres. I d really looked after them so we would have been very strong later in the race again. It s such a shame we had the contact from Rossi as we would have been on for a finish well inside the top 10 today, possibly as high as the top eight. For sure, we deserve some better luck for the final two rounds when we come back to Bahrain in a fortnight. Bratt returns to the track on March 13 and 14 when the GP2 Asia series returns to the Bahrain International Circuit for the season finale, ahead of the opening Grand Prix of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. Quins run in 9 tries in demolition of Maidenhead OXFORD Harlequins put Maidenhead to the sword, run- ning in nine tries as they posted more than 50 points against their hosts. The victory consolidated Quins league position following their local derby victory over Chinnor, and the visitors never looked like losing after Andy Noyce put them ahead. The replacement wing came on for Xavier Andre in the early stages after he suf- fered an ankle injury and crossed to round off a flowing move with Kenny Sewell slotting the con- version to make it 7-0. Quins were dominating up front, dismantling the Maidenhead pack and securing lineout ball as well as getting the edge in the loose. Sewell added a penalty to make it 10-0 before skipper Simon Chadbone drove over for Quins second try from a five-yard lineout. Oxford added points regularly throughout the first half, Morgan Cross-scoring from a three- quarter move on the left before taking an inside ball from Noyce. Fly-half Sewell set right winger Martin Nutt away with a clever cross-kick to run in from 40 yards out. Sewell added the con- version to secure Quins a bonus point before centre Dom Maley crossed to make it 32-0 at half time. Noyce set up Quins seventh, gathering his own chip before kicking again to send Maley clear to score Second row Adam Pearson was the next Quins try scorer, bagging a brace to finish the Quins scoring. Maidenhead managed to secure a consolation try in the dying seconds with an intercep- tion try from 60 yards out but it was far too little, too late.
