Read this newspaper online at www.oxfordjournal.co.uk Thursday March 4th - Wednesday March 10th, 2010 3 Historic city librarys set for new chapter AMBITIOUS plans to rede- velop the world-famous Bodleian Library have been unveiled by the University of Oxford. The multi-million pound proj- ect will see 3.5million books moved out of the library in Broad Street before work begins on a revamp to bring the depository up to date. The plans, which have been in gestation for several years, require the construction of a new book storage facility near Swindon, set to open later in 2010, to store some of the library s books. Sarah Thomas, Bodleian s librarian, said: The improve- ments to the New Bodleian building are long overdue. Thanks to the generosity of the donors who have contributed to this project, we are at last able NEWS BITES Arson guilt A WALLINGFORD man was convicted of two counts of arson at Oxford Crown Court on Friday. Alan Whitten, 47, from Johnston Place, was found guilty of setting a fire on February 26 last year in Wood Street, Wallingford, which led to a house fire, and to setting fire to some bins in St Martins Street on March 11 in 2009. Whitten was found not guilty of another arson in St Martins Street on February 18 last year. Det Con Steven Knight, who investigated the case, said: CCTV evidence was crucial for this case, which goes to show that it has its place in the prevention and detection of crime. Whitten will be sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on April 9. REPORT BY Ric Sumner newsyouroxfordshire.co to move forward with this excit- ing and much-needed develop- ment. This major investment of 78m will enable the library both to protect its great collec- tions and to open them up to readers, researchers and the public in an historic building that has been reinterpreted for the 21st century. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s, the redesigned building has been created by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. As part of the plans, the upper floor reading room, envisaged by the architect but never used as such, will be restored by removing a 1960s addition to the top of the building. The university said it would be applying for planning per- mission and listed building con- sent at the end of March. If given the green light, work on the library will begin this year and go on until the build- ing reopens in 2015. Jim Eyre, director at Wilkinson Eyre Architects, said: This is a very exciting project for us. It is both a privilege and a challenge to be working within such an important historic con- text as this and with such a unique collection of books and manuscripts. The Bodleian will be renamed the Weston Library in honour of a 25m donation towards the project from the Garfield Weston Foundation. An artists impression of how the new Weston Library will look Picture copyright Wilkinson Eyre Architects View research Oxford University Press has also donated 25m, while Julian Blackwell, president of Blackwell s Bookshop, which neighbours the New Bodleian, has donated over 6m, one of the largest cash donations ever made to a university library in the UK. The entrance hall will be known as Blackwell Hall. An exhibition of the building plans is open to the general public today (Thursday) and tomorrow between 2pm and 7.30pm in the New Bodleian Library, Parks Road, Oxford. RESEARCHERS from the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust and University of Oxford are holding an open day on Thursday March 18. The NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre is throwing open its doors to explain its research into ageing, safer pregnancy, infection control and more, with giveaways, competitions and the chance to add to a guess the scent art installation. For more information on the event or the centre, visit www.oxfordbrc.org Funding boost for community groups Co-operative membership officer Ranjit Singh and Laura Bristow, secretary of the Dorchester Carbon Project, with the calendar COMMUNITY groups across Oxfordshire are set to benefit from more than 5,000 handed out by retailer the Co-operative Group. The money, from the group s community fund, offers grants of between 100 and 2,000, with around 200,000 handed out to deserving groups each year. Abingdon Gymnastics Club has been awarded 1,640 to purchase new specialist equip- ment, including a play tunnel and asymmetric bars for pre- school groups and after-school clubs. The Dorchester Carbon Project is to get 1,000 to pro- duce a calendar for village res- idents offering tips on reducing their carbon footprint, includ- ing details of local recycling facilities. See Saw, a charity which sup- ports children who are strug- gling to cope with the loss of a parent or sibling, will also receive 1,000, towards accom- modation costs. Deddington Festivals Limited, Drayton Table Tennis Club and John Henry Newman Sailing Club have each been awarded 500. The community fund can make a real and lasting contri- bution to local communities and these Oxfordshire groups are deserving causes, said Co- operative Group regional sec- retary Paul Cranfield. Many community groups share our co-operative values and could benefit from an award and we would certainly welcome their applications. Got an opinion?
