WHEN it comes to the news, here at the Journal we like to tell it like it is, in black and white. So when we were offered the chance to adopt a baby zebra at Cotswold Wildlife Park, how could we refuse? It felt like it was time to earn our stripes. The young foal was born to proud parents Dampy and Xena and can be seen at the park in Burford in the large paddock the Zebras share with the park s three white rhinos. The baby zebra is the 40th to be born in the park s 40-year his- tory and curator Jamie Craig said: This is our first foal from our young stallion and the future looks promising. Keepers are keeping a close eye on the youngster as the adult males can be unpre- dictable but all looks to be good so far. Currently, the Oxford Journal zebra is sadly labouring without a name of his own, so we have teamed up with Cotswold Pair hunted after assault TWO people were assaulted in an attempted robbery near the Thames in Oxford on Friday. The incident took place at around 11pm at Mill Stream Walk, behind the ice rink in the city centre. A 46-year-old man was cycling along the towpath with friends when a man grabbed him by the head and told to hand over his belongings. A 16-year-old boy was also assaulted in the attack. The man as white, around 20 years old and of medium height and build. The female he was with is described as aged 14 to 15, short and tubby with darkish hair. Det Sgt Suzette Allcorn said: I would urge anyone who knows this couple to come forward and speak with us as soon as possible. This was an unprovoked attack which resulted in a young lad being assaulted. Anyone with information should call Det Sgt Allcorn via the Thames Valley Police 24- hour enquiry line on 08458 505505, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. The first burglary happened between 11.30am and 10.30pm last Thursday at a home in Waverley Avenue, Kidlington, where burglars forced their way into the property and stole cash and jewellery. The next burglary was at Price Close in Bicester shortly before 6.55pm when burglars forced their way into a house through a rear patio door and stole jewellery, including a string of pearls and a silver watch. Witnesses saw two men leav- ing the property. They are both described as white and approxi- mately 5ft 10ins tall. The first man was wearing a green Parka-style jacket, blue jeans and white trainers. His accomplice was wearing a black baseball cap, dark- coloured or black top, blue jeans and white trainers. The third robbery was at 7.10am at a property in Graham Road, Bicester. A 77-year-old man returned home and heard some noises coming from the rear of his house. When he went to investi- gate, he discovered his patio door had been smashed but no one was there. Det Insp Steve Duffy said: We believe at this time that these offences are linked and I would urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to us. I would also urge people to be vigilant to this type of offence and ask them to keep their eyes open to anyone acting suspi- ciously. If you have any concerns about anyone or any suspicious vehicles, then please do not hes- itate to contact us via the 24- hour Thames Valley police enquiry line on 08458 505505 or 999 if you see a crime taking place. The project to repair Shillingford Bridge, near Wallingford, starts on Monday and will see stonemasons work- ing on its arches, fascias and parapets. Masons will use pon- toons to access the bridge, built in 1826, from the river so the road can remain open to traffic and pedestrians. The project follows work in 2007 to waterproof the bridge and install traffic signals and footpaths. Now that the bridge has fully dried out the repair work can take place. The River Thames under Shillingford Bridge will remain open for navigation throughout the works. However boat users are advised to approach the bridge with caution and when work is being undertaken on the main span all boats will need to pass underneath using its smaller side spans. Oxfordshire County Council s cabinet member for transport, Rodney Rose, said: "This is a very important project which will protect Shillingford Bridge for years to come. The water- proofing has proved successful and we can now press ahead with the repairs. The work should cause no disruption to traffic which is also pleasing."
