12 Thursday March 4th - Wednesday March 10th, 2010 Read this newspaper online at www.oxfordjournal.co.uk NEWS BITES Teachers report improved pupil behaviour thanks to government funding for extra activities CAB windfall WEST Oxfordshire Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is to get a grant of 13,500 from the district council to pay for a part-time case worker to help people with debt and housing advice. The council has helped to fund the specialist work car- ried out by a qualified solicitor for the past four years. Barbara Shaw, manager of West Oxfordshire CAB, said: The council has been extremely supportive of our work and has helped immensely with grant funding. Anyone experiencing debt or housing difficulties can contact the CAB on 01993 705691 (Witney) or 01608 641367 (Chipping Norton). After-school clubs so cool PUPILS at a Didcot school are happier and better behaved, thanks to a government sub- sidy that helps youngsters from less well off families take part in extra activities, say chuffed teachers. Stephen Freeman Primary School is part of a pilot scheme operated by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) that will be rolled out across the south east from April. Around 20m of government funding is to be made available for economically disadvantaged children to take part in school clubs, trips and activities. Stephen Freeman head- teacher Ruth Bennie said: The subsidy has enabled us to extend the reach of our out-of- hours activities to include pupils who would not otherwise have been able to participate for financial reasons. Not only is it fantastic to be able to level the playing field and give all children the chance to enjoy our extended services REPORT BY Ric Sumner newsyouroxfordshire.co activities but there have also been significant tangible benefits to this increase in participation. We ve seen improvements in children s behaviour, communi- cation and confidence all of which benefits learning in the classroom. The Didcot Partnership, which is made up of two secondary and 14 nursery and primary schools, received 130,000 to provide the extra services. Stephen Freeman School, which has been piloting the scheme since summer 2008, used the cash to offer activities includ- ing arts and crafts, snooker, foot- ball and netball as well as break- fast and after-school clubs, and subsidies to help children take part in the brownies and cubs. So far, around 50 children have taken advantage of the TDA funding at the school. Deputy headteacher Lyn Moore said: We have noticed an effect on their self-confi- dence, health, and their attitude to learning generally. They see themselves as the same as everybody else. With the breakfast and after-school clubs, it means there isn t the temptation for parents to keep them off school when perhaps the parents need to be else- where. It levels the playing field so they all have the same opportu- nities, which is how it should be anyway. Benefits cheat A BENEFIT cheat from Carterton who fraudulently claimed 42,000 has been given a suspended prison sentence. Karen Barber, 35, of Richens Drive, pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court on Friday to claiming housing, council tax and income support ben- efit she wasn t entitled to between November 2005 and January last year. She was given an 18-month sus- pended prison sentence with a community order to under- take 80 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months. She was prosecuted by West Oxfordshire District Council. Cllr Simon Hoare, cabinet member for resources, said: Benefit fraud is a crime against every hon- est taxpayer in our district and the council will continue to work hard to identify and prosecute offenders. Stephen Freeman after-school club members, from top left: Rohan and Vivek Boyjou, Emily Biddiscombe, Katie Presley, William Hayward, Amy Green and Zoe Biddiscombe Draft community hospital plans showcased ROUGH plans of how a rede- veloped Bicester Community Hospital could look have been shown to a group working with NHS Oxfordshire on the rebuild. The health authority has pro- duced a framework to help developers bidding to work on the project come up with designs for the facility. Members of the Bicester Community Hospital Engagement Forum (CHEF), which is working with the NHS, have been shown the early stage plans. CHEF chairman, retired Bicester GP Michael Curry, said: It was good to look at something, however early, which makes the project real and CHEF members were able to make some important contri- butions. The prospect of a mod- ern hospital, with beds, for Bicester is very encouraging. The new hospital will provide all the existing healthcare serv- ices and therapies, which will include an outpatient clinic, a first aid unit and x-ray services. Campaigners have been fight- ing to make sure the hospital includes 12 intermediate care beds, which could be housed in a local nursing home. The planning framework has been drawn up for both the cur- rent site of Bicester Community Hospital and for a site called the south west option, which is just off the London Road/Middleton Stoney roundabout. Developers are expected to submit their proposals this spring, with work expected to be completed during 2012. Easy to pick up... hard to put down! www.oxfordjournal.co.uk Established 1973.
