10 Thursday March 4th - Wednesday March 10th, 2010 NEWS BITES Space walk A WALK to raise awareness of the need to protect Oxford s open green spaces takes place on Sunday June 27. Organised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) Oxford as part of its Green Lungs Project, the nine-mile circular walk stretches from north Oxford s Trap Grounds along the canal through the Oxpens and Warneford Meadows and back. At each site, there will be children s activities and infor- mation stalls. The walk is designed to raise funds to go towards the work of the Friends of Warneford Meadow and Friends of Oxpens Meadow, who are fighting for town green status, and to CPRE Oxford s Green Lungs Project. For more information, a sponsorship form and route map, call Becky on 01865 874780, email administra- torcpreoxon.org.uk or www. cpreoxon.org.uk Carpenters join up for some plane fun THE Rycotewood Furniture Centre at Oxford & Cherwell Valley College (OCVC) drew hundreds of furniture-making and carpentry enthusiasts to Oxford this month. A collaboration between Axminster Tool Centre and the college, it offered a rare treat for students and the wider woodworking community and was attended by craftsmen from the USA. Visitors grabbed the chance to try their hand at a wide range of activities such as rasp- ing, planing and sawing. Rycotewood programme manager Chris Hyde said: This has been such a winning collaboration. We ve had the opportunity to share the special history of fur- niture-making here at the col- lege and promote our excellent courses. The award-winning work of our students gets a whole new audience and the centre bene- fits from some extremely fine new tools, thanks to Axminster. There will be a wide variety of information on activities, exer- cise and leisure opportunities available in the Vale area. Visitors will also be able to par- ticipate in taster sessions for singing and tai chi exercise classes during the morning. The event is free to attend and there will be free refresh- ments available to visitors. For more information about the information fair call Age Concern Oxfordshire on 01235 859400. Districts streets are very safe says Cllr A SCHEME to tackle the fear of crime in north Oxfordshire has been launched by Cherwell District Council. Called Cherwell Together, the initiative aims to dispel myths about the level of crime in the area and promote understanding between different parts of the community. Council chiefs are worried national news stories about inner-city violence or unrest do not reflect life on the district s streets. Cllr Nigel Morris, portfolio REPORT BY Ric Sumner newsyouroxfordshire.co holder for community safety, street scene and rural services, said: This coverage can often lead to the mistaken belief that there is a thug around every corner. The stories we hear often involve gangs of youths and can affect our perceptions of all young people. But in reality, the streets of Cherwell are very safe in com- parison with many other parts of the country. And perhaps we, as council- lors, need to be more vocal about our efforts to tackle those issues which do exist. The council has booked a series of ads on local radio to tackle negative perceptions of young people and is promoting the work it does with other groups to tackle crime and anti- social behaviour. One of the groups is Azad Hill Football Club in Banbury, which preaches the three T s toler- ance, togetherness and team- work and works with young footballers from all backgrounds. Club spokesman Jon Reglar said: I truly believe in being part of the solution, not just pointing out the problems. It is proven that without the activities we provide at Azad Hill and other clubs like us, cer- tain young people are at risk from other negative influences. "We struggle to get the normal parental support that other clubs we play and come across take for granted. Young people need role mod- els and need to understand their role in their community. Ignoring them or alienating them cannot lead to a positive result for anyone. The council and Thames Valley police form the Cherwell Safer Communities Partnership, which has also launched a website pro- viding a wealth of community safety information in one place. For more information on the partnership, visit www.cherwell csi.org Come and Explore Oxfordshire VISITOR attractions across the county are gearing up to kick- start the new tourist season at a special event showcasing the best of what Oxfordshire has to offer. The second Explore Oxfordshire exhibition will take place at the 18th Century Heythrop Park Resort in Enstone, West Oxfordshire, on Monday 15 March, 10.30am to 3pm. The event coincides with the start of national British Tourism Week and more than 40 Oxfordshire attractions are exhibiting. These range from major venues such as Cotswold Wildlife Park, Blenheim Palace and Didcot Railway Centre, to smaller tourism businesses, con- ference centres and hotels, and leisure facilities. It is the second Explore Oxfordshire event to be organised by West Oxfordshire District Council s tourism team on behalf of all of Oxfordshire s councils. The event is supported by Tourism South East, the region s official tourist board. All are welcome to attend the free event. Visitors will be able to speak to the people who own or manage the attractions and find out what is happening in Oxfordshire in 2010. Cllr Hilary Biles, West Oxfordshire District Council s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, said: Following on from the success of last year s Explore Oxfordshire, this year s event looks set to be bigger and better. Tourism plays an important role in West Oxfordshire and this event brings together everything that makes the district a must-see vis- itor destination.
