Easy to pick up... hard to put down! www.oxfordjournal.co.uk Established 1973 Thursday February 18th - Wednesday February 24th, 2010 Now delivered door to door in areas of Oxfordshire Villagers cook up a treat for funds PAGE 5 SNUBBED Academy bid for school disregards parents views, say campaigners PLANS to re-launch Oxford School as a privately-run acad- emy are back on the agenda after a new sponsor stepped forward to take part in the scheme, rekindling parents anger. Oxfordshire County Council was forced to go back to the drawing board in December last year after an initial sponsor for the project, the United Learning Trust (ULT), withdrew from the scheme following a poor Ofsted report at its existing Sheffield academy. The new partner, the CfBT Education Trust, is an education consultancy based in Reading which already sponsors a Church of England academy in Mitcham, Surrey called St Marks. If the scheme goes ahead, it could eventually mean CfBT run- ning the academy with co-spon- sors Oxfordshire County Council and Oxford & Cherwell Valley College (OCVC), catering for up to 1,600 pupils aged three to 19. Government schools minister Vernon Croaker has signed a statement of intent the first stage to re-starting the process REPORT by Ric Sumner after ULT pulled out before Christmas and plans will be outlined to parents and school staff at informal meetings over coming weeks. Cllr Michael Waine, county council cabinet member for school improvement, said: We are quite delighted with the announcement that CfBT will be the sponsor to establish an acad- emy at Oxford School. The school is not the first choice for families that live in the area close to and around it in east Oxford and our aim in turn- ing it into an academy is to make it the first choice for parents. That was a factor at Drayton School in Banbury, which two to three years ago was very much the last choice for parents in Banbury, and over the past two years it has become the first choice for parents and has been over-subscribed vastly. But campaigners from the Save Oxford School group are angry the plans are being forced through despite an improvement in exam results at the previously failing school. And they are upset that CfBT has been brought on board, as their other academy, St Marks, was judged inadequate by Ofsted inspectors in June last year. Anna Thorne, a mum of two at the school, said: Given the cur- rent high standard of education at the school and the excellent results achieved last year, to hand it over to a group whose only other academy has been judged inadequate seems irre- sponsible. They are playing politics with our childrens education. Gawain Little from the Oxfordshire branch of the National Union of Teachers said: The local authority seems to have learned nothing from the process so far. They seem to be offering the same model that has already been rejected by local people. It shows a complete dis- regard for the views of the people of east Oxford. The new academy could open its door as early as January 2011.
