Campaigners from across the UK set out to cause major disruption at the Aldermaston site by blocking every gate. From 7am, hundreds took part in a largely peaceful protest, led by the Trident Ploughshares group. Some campaigners locked themselves to the gates and were cut free by police, who had a strong presence at the demon- stration. The protest began at 7am and lasted around eight hours and by the end of the day police had made 26 arrests, including one on suspicion of causing criminal damage, six for entering a protected site and 19 for obstructing the public high- way. Brian Larkin, a Trident Ploughshares activist from Scotland, said: This is the biggest blockade of Aldermaston in years and comes at a time when even major political parties are questioning the logic of spending up to 97bn on useless weapons. Despite being one of the weaker competitors in the group, Dr Jones made it through five weeks, thanks to the public vote but was not so lucky this time around. Having been pitted against for- mer Coronation Street actor Danny Young, he lost out unani- mously in the judges voting. Judge and Spice Girl Emma Bunton delivered a scathing report, telling him: I dont think the competition can truly start while youre still in it. After hearing the result, Dr Jones said: Dancing on ice for me has been a fantastic experi- ence, from not being able to do my boots up on my own to learn- It demonstrates the depth and breadth AWE said: Our sites remained open of determined civil society opposition to and continued to operate normally throughout the day. Angie Zelter, co- founder of Trident Ploughshares, said: We are calling on the UK to abide by its agreement to achieve nuclear disarmament that means taking Trident off patrol, halt- ing all work and prepa- rations for any new generation of nuclear weapons and using the MADE AWE only for disarma- TO ment and verification. tres .1 me Protesters get over their message NO T SE RE VA EA TO CR S S IN THI AT CUTTING THE COST OF CURTAINS & FABRICS POLES Upto 2 5 10 tres Upto 3.8 me m H Huge choice from Ven e etian, rtical CURTAIN & Y UPHOLSTERY U FABRICS P 1.49P Per metre MEASU BLIN RE Roller, DS V R WHY N omans TRY US OT ?
