www.basingstokeobserver Thursday February 18th - Wednesday February 24th, 2010 39 Sport Worthy Stoke win but no bonus point ON A bitterly cold Saturday afternoon, Stoke picked up another home league win against lower opposition but once again failed to gain a four- try bonus point. While it was an improvement on previous performances, Stoke were unable to put their oppo- nents, North Waltham, to the sword and punish them. FOOTBALL The early encounters saw chances at a premium but Stoke struck first with an unconverted try for a 5-0 lead. A period of pressure from Stoke led to a lineout just inside the visitors half, which gave the backs good ball. A tidy backs move saw Stoke move the ball wide out to the left wing, giving flying winger Glen Lewis a one- on-one with the full-back. Lewis chipped ahead and looked to be in but was blatantly blocked by the full-back. The visi- tors were lucky to get away with only a penalty, which Stoke kicked to the corner but were denied a try by the referee. On the half hour mark, the visi- tors had their first sniff of points RUGBY by Martyn Humberstone when they kicked at goal but the move was unsuccessful and from the ensuing drop-out Waltham kicked back to Stoke. From the resulting scrum, the home side won the ball against the head and worked their way up the field. Stoke moved the ball right and then snapped back against the grain, giving captain Steve Appleby a massive hole to stroll through for Stokes second try. The conversion was unsuc- cessful but they now had a 10-0 lead. Stoke came close again when they moved the ball wide from a lineout but Andrew Fitchett was unable to find his team mate and the pass strayed forward. The home side attacked the left wing and a nice infield run set up an attacking ruck. The visitors slowed the ball down and con- ceded a penalty inside their own 22 and Sam Goodall stepped up and duly added three points on the stroke of half time and 13-0. The second half began with a yellow card for the visitors prop, despite North Waltham being on top for the first five minutes. Even with a man down, the vis- itors fought their way up the field to sneak over the white wash on the short side after a good for- wards drive. The kicker was unable to add the extras from out wide to the right and reduce the arrears to 13-5. The next 20 minutes saw the majority of play in the midfield, plagued with mistakes and infringements. Both teams received yellow cards for their misdemeanours at the break down, with Appleby having a 10 minutes rest for the home side for not rolling away. Stoke looked like scoring on 68 minutes when Andy Wilkinson broke blind from a scrum to feed Goodall, who made it into the 22 before finding himself isolated and the chance was lost. On 70 minutes, Stoke extended their lead after a good run by Scott resulted in a penalty for the home side and Goodall added the three points and a 16-5 lead. And yet another visiting player was shown a yellow card. Stoke finished on a high with a try at the death. Goodall hit the post with the conversion attempt to leave the winning margin at 21- 5. Afterwards, coach Gareth Lewis said: We addressed a lot of organisational problems which resulted in a better performance. While our opponents were big and strong up front, which caused us some problems, we were still able to put together some good phases of play at times. We can now look forward to next week when we visit Jersey, the league leaders, with a no holds barred attitude.
