Read this newspaper online at www.basingstokeobserver Thursday February 18th - Wednesday February 24th, 2010 3 shimself at centre of bitter political feuding NEWS BITES Recycling tales STORY-TIME this half term will take on a green theme, thanks to Basingstoke council. Cabinet member for the envi- ronment Cllr Elaine Still said: These story-time sessions show that recycling can be fun and interesting. By teaching young people how to recycle through enjoyable sessions like this, we are creating a new generation of recyclers who can also take home what they learnt to help their parents be greener. For more details visit, Basingstoke library in Festival Place at 10.30am tomorrow (Friday). vote clash I am still the same person that was approved as deputy mayor. I havent changed but what has happened is a vengeful, spiteful act of retribution because I will not be a council spin doctor Cllr Heath nasty party. The office of mayor has been debased by what has been done and it will never be the same again. We, as a Labour group, did not want anything to do with something that is so blatantly wrong. This is not about Cllr Heath the Conservatives have made it about him when it should be about the office of mayor. I cannot now see where it will go. In March, the Tories will want to put the next person in the chair, who just so happens to be a Conservative. The councils Tory leader, Andrew Finney, told the Observer: This is not a party political issue, it is about the individual council members expressing their opinion. The office of mayor is hugely important as the chair of council meetings, the first citizen of the borough and the Queens repre- sentative for Basingstoke and Deane. I do not think we have been faced with the need to do this before as no deputy mayor has been in the situation Cllr Heath has found himself in. All members have the highest regard for the office of mayor and I know many people found it an uncomfortable meeting and did wrestle with their con- science. Store makeover WILKINSON in The Malls, Basingstoke, is closing to undergo a makeover. The store will close at 6pm on Monday March 1 and reopen on Thursday March 4 with Basingstoke town manager Frank Gray cutting the red tape. Store manager Andrew Dawson said: We are looking forward to giving the Basingstoke store a fresh new look, creating a brighter shop- ping environment. Winning logo A NEW logo has been picked for Charlie s day care unit at Basingstoke hospital. Competition winner Maddi Scott-Knight, who attends Daneshill School, designed a logo with a child holding the sun above her head. The unit treats children for a range of medical conditions. Collectors fair AN ANTIQUES and collectors fair is being held from 10am to 4pm on Sunday March 14 at Hartley Wintneys Victoria Hall. The fair will include porcelain, linen and lace, books and coins on 45 stalls. Refreshments will also be available. For more informa- tion, call 01189 311779. Dangerous vehicles taken off the road in crackdown A HAMPSHIRE police crack- down on unsafe driving led to five illegal and dangerous vehicles being taken off the road. The campaign was conducted on Monday last week along the A340 between Tadley and Sherborne St John. The operation, which took place between 7am and 12.30pm, was a joint scheme involving both offi- cers from the Hampshire con- stabulary and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). Using powers under the Road Traffic Act and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, offi- cers seized two vehicles for being uninsured and one for being untaxed, and VOSA prohibited the driving of two vehicles that were not considered roadworthy, one due to defective lights and the other for defective tyres. Roads Policing Unit Sergeant Lyndon Barrett said: The A340 is a busy arterial route from Tadley into Basingstoke. This operation was designed to target both uninsured, untaxed drivers and unsafe vehicles. It was a great success and a number of vehicles and drivers were taken off the road. Sgt Barrett urged road users to ensure they keep their vehi- cles well maintained, especially during the remaining winter months, when weather condi- tions can have a considerable effect on the performance of tyres and brakes. 1992-2010 18 successful years Supportive, Challenging, Fun Vulnerable children and teenagers need foster carers to look after them and help them learn, grow and achieve.
