Sadly, Sebastian Gates lost his two- and-a-half year fight against a rare form of childhood cancer on Christmas Eve, 2003, aged nine. Today (Thursday) would have been his 16th birthday and to mark the occasion a groundbreaking ceremony is taking place on the site of the holiday home at North Waltham, near Basingstoke. Just days before he died, Sebastian revealed his dream for a place where children like him could get away from hospital life and have fun. In memory of their courageous son, Jane and Michael Gates launched a fundraising drive for the respite retreat, forming Sebastians Action Trust. The site was provided by local landowner Pat Sweeney. But having been granted planning permission in September 2008, building was delayed while the couple battled to meet 17 REPORT by Simon Moss conditions set by council planners. Jane, who is director of the trust, said: We are delighted to have now reached the groundbreaking stage and felt that it was fitting to hold the groundbreaking event on what is a spe- cial day for us as a family. The event is also a way of saying thank you to many of the people who offered their support or helped us to raise money over the years. As a family and as a charity, we are extremely grateful to all who have sup- ported Sebastians vision and I know our son would have been both thrilled and humbled by the sheer number of people who have given so much to help us achieve his last wish. The home will have two four-bedroom apartments with facilities including a swimming pool and games room. To support Sebastians Action Trust, visit www.sebastiansactiontru or call 01344 622500.
