8 Thursday January 14th - Wednesday January 20th, 2010 Read this newspaper online at www.basingstokeobserver NEWS BITES Talking point HISTORY buffs should get along to a meeting in the town centre next week. Friends of the Willis Museum will meet at the Top-of-the-Town venue on Thursday at 7.30pm. This months talk is on the devel- opment of the British sword from the Civil War to the Great War by Ian Williams, a mem- ber of the group. Non-mem- bers are welcome for a small charge. Hunt for best tot services Sam Willoughby with daughter Alice A NORTH Hampshire mum is busy preparing to hold her fourth national awards scheme. Sam Willoughby from Bramley launched website Whats On 4 Little Ones after the birth of daughter Alice and has seen it go from strength to strength. Now, having a host of websites listing information and activities for parents, she is seeking nom- inations for the Whats on 4 2010 Awards. Supported by Prima Baby & Pregnancy magazine, the awards honour a range of serv- ices for the little ones, including best after-school group or breakfast club and most out- REPORT by Simon Moss standing leader for the under - fives. Last year, more than 14,000 votes were cast for more than 1,000 nominees across the UK. There are 16 awards in all, with previous winners heralding the scheme a great success. Sam said: I am so excited about our 2010 awards. I cannot wait to receive the nominations as it is a privilege to read how much difference these groups and people make to the everyday lives of families across the country. Mosaic on view AN IRON age mosaic will go on display at Andover Museum from today (Thursday). The decorative pavement dates from the fourth century and was dis- covered in 1885. County cul- ture chief Cllr Margaret Snaith-Tempia said: As work is under way to complete the mosaic, we are inviting people to see this transformation take place and view it in all its glory. Sasha Felix, co-founder of three times winner at the awards Sign and Sign, said: Its great to see Whats on 4 going from strength to strength. Whats On 4 websites are quality websites for parents and we were thrilled to have won the award in previous years. We are looking forward to the results of the 2010 competition. Nominations can be made until the end of February at www.whatson4littleones. www.whatson4schoolkids. or whatson4kidsparties.co. The winners of the awards will be announced by TV personality Phil Gallagher on June 7 at the Brighton Baby Expo. Taxi law change RESIDENTS views are being sought on how taxi laws should change after a nation- wide consultation was launched in the town. Chairwoman of Basingstoke councils licensing committee Rita Burgess said: It is important that taxi users have their say on how to modernise the way taxis and private hire vehicles are licensed as any changes will be designed to improve public safety. The consultation runs until Wednesday March 31 at www.institute oflicensing.org Fire crews put out blaze in Are you celebrating a historic thatched property marriage milestone? AN 18th century thatched property in Tadley was saved after fire broke out in a chimney. The blaze at the property in Knapp Lane happened on Monday last week, just before 4pm. Fire crews from Tadley, Basingstoke and Rushmoor who attended the scene were praised by rescue chiefs. Dave Norgate from Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: Fortunately, the fire was quickly identified by crews as being con- fined to the chimney. However, had this gone undetected the consequences could have been far more devastating. Fires in thatched properties cause con- siderable damage to the building and in a property like this, which dates from the 1700s, there could have been a significant loss to our heritage and it would have taken a long time to rebuild the home again. Cllr Brian Gurden hopes residents who have notched up 50 or 60 years of marriages will join him at the councils civic offices on March 22. They must have celebrated the mile- stone between May 14 in 2009 and May this year. Cllr Gurden said: I know more and more people are living longer but it is still a terrific achievement to notch up a golden or diamond wedding anniver- sary. These couples that I will have the pleasure to meet at my reception have so much to pass on to us all about how to sustain successful relationships.I look forward to receiving a master class on how to make the world a better place. Anyone wishing to attend should call the council on 01256 844844.
