Cllr Felicity Hindson, adult serv- ices chief, said: We have been working with our health colleagues to promote the benefits of exercising to help reduce the risk of falling for older people. I would urge older residents, whenever possible, to carry out simple exercises to them both mobile and keep warm during the chill. Every year, eight million real Christmas trees are thrown away in the UK, creating 160,000 tonnes of additional waste. Last year, Basingstoke and Deane residents recycled around 3,000 Christmas trees through the councils drop-off points, which stopped 30 tonnes of waste being created. Instead, the recycled trees were transformed into soil con- ditioners and wood chippings for the boroughs parks. If residents miss the collec- tions at these locations, they can take their tree to the recycling centre on Wade Road. The Wade Road drop-off centre is open from 8am to 4pm. IF YOU have an eye for the birds (the feathered variety), then why not join the Friends of Loddon Vale Parks Group on Saturday January 30? The group will be organising a bird watch at Glebe Gardens to coincide with the national RSPB bird watch event. This will also mark the installation of bird and bat boxes in the park. The Friends of Loddon Vale Parks Group has been regu- larly organising work groups and events since it launched in January last year. Local resident Christine Aymes founded the group after she contacted the bor- ough council to enquire about litter picking in the parks in her local areas. Before long, the Friends of Loddon Vale Parks Group was created to manage wildlife work on King George V play- ing fields, the small open space on Lower Brook Street, Victory Park and Glebe Gardens, which all follow the River Loddons path. The group is always looking for volunteers to help with its work. Greenfields Junior School will benefit from new classrooms and external play areas. Cllr David Kirk, Hampshire County Councils lead member for childrens services, said: These works will see the school extended and improved with larger teaching spaces to meet the schools needs better. There will also be flexibility to use some of the new space out of school hours. Grafitti buster HARTS annual Grafitti Busting Week will take place from March 29 to April 5. Community safety teams will be out clearing all reported cases of graffiti. Cllr Nippy Singh said: This is a great example of a project run by the community safety team to help the victims of crime in the neighbourhood in which they live.
