6 Thursday October 1st - Wednesday October 7th, 2009 Read this newspaper online at www.youroxfordshire.co. NEWS BITES Say on services OXFORDSHIRE residents are being given a say on the future of services for young people in the county. The county council is draw- ing up a children and young people s plan and is asking people to comment on all aspects of life for youngsters, from schools to youth centres and social care issues. Copies of the draft plan and online questionnaires are available from today (Thursday) at www.oxfordshire.gov.uk, with the deadline for comments being Friday October 30. Rogue trader who preyed on woman, 90, is jailed A ROGUE trader who tried to con a 90-year-old woman out of 2,600 for non-existent work has been jailed for six months. Hugh Fury Jnr, 26, of The Beeches, Chipping Norton, cold-called at his victim s home in Carterton, claiming he had come to work on the drains. Fury got her to fill two buckets of water and then poured some liquid, followed by the water, down the drains. REPORT by Alex Winter He then asked for payment of 2,600 in two cheques. However, a friend of the victim arrived and alerted the police, who went to the bank to stop the cheques. A neighbour had also noted part of the registration of the vehicle Fury had arrived in, Store reopens OXFORD convenience store JM Halal has reopened in Cowley Road after being closed on hygiene grounds. Cockroach and mouse infestations on the premises led to the store being closed by the county council on September 11. A resident complained about the smell of rotting meat in plastic bags that had been left on the pavement. Environmental health offi- cers returned to the premises on September 24 and decided it was safe to re- open. They will continue to monitor the store. which allowed police and Trading Standards officers to track down the conman and establish that one of the cheques had been paid into his bank account. Fury pleaded guilty to a single charge of fraud when he appeared at an earlier hearing at Oxford Crown Court follow- ing a prosecution brought by Oxfordshire County Councils Trading Standards Service. He was sentenced by the court last Friday. Cllr Judith Heathcoat, county council cabinet member for safer and stronger communi- ties, said: "Thanks to the actions of the victim s neighbours and friends, this rogue trader has been caught. We would encourage every- one to look after their vulnera- ble neighbours in this way. This is another great result for part- nership working between Trading Standards and Thames Valley Police." Head of Trading Standards Nigel Strick said: "This was a despicable crime, picking on a vulnerable 90-year-old and try- ing to take a large sum of money for doing nothing. We must praise the action of her friend and neighbour who both stopped the money being taken and provided the evi- dence to allow us to track down the offender." He added: "We would advise anybody who is cold-called at their home to be very cautious and make sure they obtain esti- mates elsewhere before agree- ing to have any work done." Photographers reveal the wider picture about city life AN EXHIBITION is being held by amateur and semi-profes- sional Oxford photographers looking at the lesser-known side of the city throughout October. The group met on photo-shar- ing website Flickr before decid- ing to form the Oxford Flickr Group and arrange the exhibi- tion together. Members wanted to show tourists and students the city beyond the Dreaming Spires , with each photograph in the exhibition geographically tagged to encourage visitors to explore the city. Organiser Garrett Coakley said: It s been an exciting chal- lenge setting up an exhibition when most of the exhibitors have only communicated online it just goes to show that when you have an internet-based commu- nity of like-minded individuals you can translate that into a real- world event. A book containing all of the photographs will be on sale at the venue and on the website. The exhibition is running at The Jam Factory in Holly Bush Row, Oxford, until October 31. Admission is free. For more information on the group, visit www.flickr.com/ groups/oxford-uk/ Adult learning THERE is still time to join an adult learning course at ven- ues around Oxfordshire. Hundreds of full-time and weekend courses are on offer throughout the county. For more information about courses and details of how to enrol, visit www.oxfordshire. gov.uk/adultlearning or call 08453 510646. Photographers in Oxford have joined forces for an exhibition Creative thinking: the key to success MICROSOFT, Hewlett Packard, CNN, MTV and FedEx all huge companies but what else do they have in common? Answer: they all started in a time of economic downturn. A recession can mean opportu- nity; an opportunity to re-evalu- ate, to stop and think about where we are going; to re- assess our values and priori- ties. It can be an opportunity to take a new direction in work and life. School of Dreams, which is supported and funded by Honda (UK), is a series of Thinking Skills workshops for pupils aged nine to 13 in UK schools. Along with valuable thinking techniques and skills, the programme draws upon Honda s philosophies and real- life examples of creative think- ing, which are behind many of its products. Closely linked to the National Curriculum, School of Dreams has been delivered to more than 150 schools, directly engaging more than 4,500 pupils and 500 teachers. School of Dreams is just one example of Honda s do-er attitude. Honda (UK) has also teamed up with the UK-wide database of volunteering opportunities, provided by do-it.org.uk in partnership with the Volunteer Centre net- work, which matches volun- teers to environmental proj- ects looking for support. To find out more, visit the website in the advertisement below and get doing! The final Honda feature is all about inspiring the younger generation to go off and do and there is a wealth of oppor- tunity for support advertising, including community projects aimed at youths, colleges and university s, sports clubs, citi- zens advice bureau and volun- teering schemes.
