Thursday October 1st - Wednesday October 7th, 2009 3 VICTORY IN HOMES BATTLE From Front Page Day of the Jackal driver Staff Sgt Claire Griffiths and Sergeant Simon Griffiths appears that this news means that we don t have to wait for the government to take this matter to the High Court, he said. A similar case was taken to the High Court over the East of England plan and it failed in the High Court. "This outcome means the gov- ernment can formally consider the alternatives for the urban extension to the city and then the city council is confident that the best option will remain south of Grenoble Road. "We anticipate that this further work, including further consul- tation and the final publication of the plan, will take just under six months." A spokesperson for the department for Communities and Local Government said there had been five legal chal- lenges to the South East Plan and it had written to all of the claimants to say it would not be contesting them in court. "The South East needs a long term development vision that addresses housing shortages and strengthens the regions economy. the spokesperson said. The legal challenge to a small portion of the plan will now be considered by the legal system, therefore, it would be inappro- priate to comment further. However, Michael Tyce said the CPRE was confident com- mon sense would prevail and all thoughts of Oxford being allowed to sprawl over the Green Belt will be abandoned. If it should be resurrected, we stand ready to fight it again, he added. Emotional welcome for returning troops EMOTIONS were running high as families gathered at Dalton Barracks in Abingdon to welcome home the latest group of troops from service in Afghanistan. Eighty soldiers from 3 and 4 Logistics Support Regiment arrived home after a six-month tour overseas on Tuesday to find parents, partners and chil- dren waiting for them. The troops, who flew into RAF Brize Norton earlier in the day after a short decompression stop over in Cyprus, included Staff Sergeant Claire Griffiths, 33, the only British woman sol- dier driving Jackal combat vehicles on patrol in Afghanistan. Sgt Griffiths, who has previ- ously served in Iraq, Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Bosnia, was greeted by fellow serving soldier and husband Sergeant Simon Griffiths, 36, who served in Afghanistan in 2007. He said: The welfare package is really good. When I was on tour, we were allowed 20 min- REPORT by Ric Sumner utes on the phone per week but that s gone up to 30 now, and then there s email and the internet to make sure we re aware of everything that s going on. We re heading off to Paris tomorrow for a break. Also returning was Major Tom Wood of 31 Regiment, 3 Logistics Support Regiment, who had been testing the per- formance of the Jackal combat vehicles from Camp Shorabak, in Helmand Province. There to meet him were par- ents George, 67, and Pat, 62, who travelled down from Yorkshire, wife Celia, 34, and son Oscar, who was aged two on Wednesday. Celia told the Journal: I think for six-and-a-half months you just put your emotions on hold. It s been very difficult but it s lovely to have him home. Oscar is going to have the best birth- day party he will ever have. Celia, a former serving soldier who is now training to be a plumber, said knowing what her husband was going through made the situation worse. It s very bad, because they can t lie to you about what they re doing. I knew what he was getting up to, she added. George Wood said: It s very emotional. They ve done a fan- tastic job. Despite not being given pre- ferred bidder status by Oxfordshire County Council, waste group WRG has moved forward with its planning applica- tion for an incinerator. If the plans are given the green light, it could mean two incinera- tors in the county, with a county council-backed facility at Ardley, near Bicester. Wantage MP Ed Vaizey told res- idents at a public meeting in Sutton Courtenay last month, he had written to WRG calling on the firm to withdraw its planning application and saying, following the county council s decision last month, that the firm s proposals did not represent value for money. To comment on the application, email mary.thompsonoxford- shire.gov.uk by Wednesday, October 6, quoting reference WRG SUT/APF/616 60CM. Electric refuse vehicle cleans up city OXFORD City Council is tri- alling an electric powered vehicle that produces no exhaust fumes. The vehicle, a 3.5 tonne Nissan Cabstar, will be out col- lecting rubbish in the city after An electric-powered Nissan Cabstar is on trial on Oxford s streets it was placed with the council by Bampton-based company CBL Electric Vehicles. The trial will show the com- pany how their vehicle, which uses no other fuel, performs over a longer of period of time. The vehicle, which is clean and quiet, has a range of 60 miles and its top speed is fixed at the city s new 20mph limit. Cllr John Tanner, board mem- ber for a cleaner, greener city, said: I m thrilled that we are trialing this green electric vehi- cle in Oxford. This is good for Oxford s car- bon footprint and should help other councils to cut their car- bon emissions too. We are pleased to be helping a local Oxfordshire company develop clean vehicles for the future that can use renewable energy." John Lenehan, CBL s manag- ing director, said: Working with the city council will give us a great opportunity to fine-tune this unique Oxfordshire-built vehicle prior to launching it with some of our existing cus- tomers and developing it for future markets. The firm has been building and supplying specialist electric vehicles since 1978.
