Squaddie fights back from injury to join assault on Mount Kilimanjaro NEWS BITES Oxford Journal 9-11 Cholswell Court, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX13 6HX Safety steps A FOOTPATH at a north Oxfordshire village has been repaired after parishioners complained that it was unsafe. The path leading to St John the Baptist Church in Hornton near Banbury had become uneven. It was rebuilt by the Countryside Service using as much of the original paving as possible to maintain it as an historic route. Matt Ball, Oxfordshire County Council s countryside tasks supervisor, said: The council was pleased to work with locals to provide them with a more even footpath, and I hope that the work will have solved many of the problems which villagers had faced with the footpath in the past. At the end of the month, LCpl Jonathon Frenchie Le Galloudec, 28, will take on the biggest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,896m. He will be a member of the Band of Five, who have all been injured on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The group is taking on the peak in Tanzania in a bid to raise 100,000 for Help For Heroes, a charity that helped some of the members. In 2007, LCpl Le Galloudec was given his grim diagnosis after being evacuated from Iraq to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham but proved the doc- tors wrong by walking out of the hospital after several months of intensive care. After they said I would never walk, I was desperate to prove them wrong, he said. The Kilimanjaro climb is not the first challenge the squaddie has undertaken since learning to walk again. Despite ongoing problems with his legs, LCpl Le Galloudec learnt to ski as part of the army s Battle Back programme, which challenges disabled soldiers to REPORT by Ric Sumner re-build their confidence and get over mental and physical chal- lenges. It was fantastic learning to ski, it really helped rebuild your confidence, he said. LCpl Le Galloudec currently works in the welfare office of the 4th Battalion The Rifles in Tidworth, Wiltshire, sharing experiences with other soldiers injured during service in Afghanistan. I have personal experience which I can share with them and let them know that being injured isn t the end of the world, although the road to recovery can be long and frustrating, he said. His parents, Steve and Sarah- Jean, have been supporting him through his training. We re incredibly proud of what he has achieved in his recovery, and we re all going to be willing him to the summit when he makes his attempt at climbing Kilimanjaro, said Steve, a retired RAF Flight Lieutenant. Cllr quits post OXFORDSHIRE County Council s cabinet member for finance and property, Cllr Charles Shouler, has left his post with immediate effect for health reasons. Cllr Shouler, who has been in his post since 2005 and a member of the council since 1989, will continue as a coun- cillor. Council leader Keith Mitchell will share his respon- sibilities with deputy leader Cllr David Robertson. Cllr Mitchell said: "Charles has given sterling service to the county council over many years. He has been a charis- matic member of the cabinet. We are all sorry to see him step aside." Could you be a friend to new community hospital? RESIDENTS are being urged to help Oxfords new City Community Hospital by form- ing a strong support group. The call has come from Oxfordshire county councillor Larry Sanders, co-chairman of Oxfordshire Keep Our NHS Public group. Cllr Sanders wants people to contact Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, which will oversee the running of the 20-bed facil- ity at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and volunteer to get involved in a friends of... group. He said: Many community hospitals have a very effective friends group but OxComm never had that. Because it was stuck at the Churchill Hospital site it never felt like something that was particularly ours . If we can get people to con- tact Community Health Oxfordshire (CHO) and get involved in something like that, it will be a great help towards making the hospital a success. The old community hospital, OxComm, was closed in May after a series of outbreaks of the bacteria clostridium diffi- cile. Last month, plans were out- lined for a new 3m facility within the JR Hospital.
