Letters to the Editor Send us your letter by any of the following methods: email it to: newsyouroxfordshire.co fill in the form on our website: www.youroxfordshire.co. or post it to: Letters, Oxford Journal, 9-11 Cholswell Court, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX13 6HX Letter of the week Keeping baby safe I AM writing on behalf of the Meningitis Trust the UK s longest established meningitis charity in response to news that The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) is run- ning a series of free seminars called BabySafe to attract more parents to first aid. The campaign will be teaching par- ents vital life-saving skills, as well as what to do if a parent suspects meningitis, and we would like to offer RLSS our support with this. Meningitis has been in the news a lot lately with the fear of it being mis- taken for swine flu but it s important for people to be aware that the dis- ease has never gone away. It still affects thousands of babies, children, teenagers and adults in the UK every year. Recognising the symptoms can be difficult as many are similar to more common illnesses like the flu. Rapid deterioration will take hold if left untreated. Symptoms can appear together and some may not appear at all. They include fever (possibly with cold hands and feet), headache, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, drowsi- ness, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and confusion. In babies, an unusual cry, dislike of being handled and refusing feeds are also signs that can point to meningitis. If in doubt, people should always seek urgent medical advice. We produce and distribute free credit card-sized symptoms cards for people to keep in their wallets and purses. To request these, call our freephone 24-hour nurse-led helpline on 0800 028 18 28 or visit our website at www.meningitis-trust.or Please help to make a difference - sign-up now to join our team of run- ners. I can be contacted on 01737 365018 or by email at eventsthechil- drenstrust. org.uk or visit: www.the childrenstrust.org.uk/g An information pack, with tips on fundraising for the run will be pro- vided to all runners who register. Step out for funds ON BEHALF of Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds, I would like to thank you, your colleagues and readers for your continuing support. In the last financial year 7.4m was raised and, given the difficult global economy, we are especially grateful for such amazing support. This generosity has helped fund bet- ter patients facilities and medical equipment across Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, including patient gardens that would otherwise have been empty spaces, three com- puter integrated theatres allowing more keyhole surgery, meaning a shorter recovery time, and a new car to assist with elderly patient transport. We wholeheartedly welcome the community s involvement across the south and I write to also make people aware of a forthcoming event that is an easy way for anyone to get involved. Last year, 450 people took part in the inaugural Its Not Just A Walk In The Park, raising over 30,000 for the Oxford Cancer and Haematology Centre. This year the event returns on Sunday October 18 and will also be raising money for the Oxford Heart Centre. These centres treat numerous patients from across your region. The three-mile route is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, so if your readers would like to know more about taking part they should call Cynthia on O1865 743444 or visit www.orhcharitablefunds. Take a year out AS THE dust settles after the A- level results and people are won- dering what step to take next, I would recommend taking a gap year to try out new things. You will never again be as free as you are now, with no major finan- cial commitments or family con- straints. After spending some time travel- ling round the Far East, I signed up to volunteer with CSV (Community Service Volunteers). I spent the first three months in Cambridge supporting a child with learning difficulties. I then moved to London to help run CSV s Young at Heart project, which focuses on breaking down barriers between the generations. I m gaining experience in project management, marketing and media, as well as living in London on the cheap, as CSV pays my expenses and provides me with an allowance. To find out more go to www.csv. org.uk/gapyear or call 0800 374 991 Bridie Taylor Services and Education Director, Meningitis Trust Diana de Moura Stewart Fundraising Manager, The Children s Trust Run to charitys aid I WOULD like to make a special appeal to running enthusiasts, who would like to take part in the Bupa Great South Run Europe s lead- ing 10-mile road run, from Southsea to Portsmouth, on Sunday October 25. The Children s Trust has a few guaranteed places, so I would be delighted to hear from any interested runners as soon as possible, but no later than September 28. By taking part in this event and running with The Children s Trust s team, you will be raising money for some of the UK s most severely disabled children and helping to enhance their lives. The Children s Trust is a national charity, which provides care, educa- tion and therapy for children with multiple disabilities and complex health needs and rehabilitation serv- ices to children with an acquired brain injury. This is a very special year for The Children s Trust, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary and opening a new residential rehabilitation centre for children with an acquired brain injury. Such woolly claims NO DOUBT many of us recently followed the fate of Marcus the lamb who had been hand-reared by primary school children in Kent, so that they could be educated in all aspects of farming and everything that implies . But this primary school project gave children a false image of farm- ing, as animals on modern farms are not hand-reared or given the individ- ual care that was bestowed upon Marcus. Instead, most of them are crowded into filthy factory farms where disease is rife. The children should have been allowed to bear wit- ness to Marcuss killing so that they could then make an informed deci- sion as to whether they wanted to be part of such a cruel and unnecessary industry. To find out how Marcus would have spent the last moments of his life, visit the Animal Aid website (www.animalaid.org.uk) to view recently released undercover footage taken inside three randomly chosen British abattoirs.
