The talk gets under way at Kempshott Village Hall, Pack Lane, Basingstoke, on Monday October 19, from 7.30pm. Entry costs 3. For more details, call 01256 324185. A NORTH Hampshire com- munity came together to cele- brate the 50th anniversary of a popular place of worship. St Michaels Church in Tadley marked the milestone with a special service on Tuesday, September 29. The church, founded thanks to workers at the nearby Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), has become a focal point in the community. Father Patrick Tansey, a key organiser in the celebrations, told the Observer: A large number of Irish and other Catholics worked at AWE and there was a general feeling among them that they needed a place to worship. REPORT by Simon Moss It came out of necessity and development but then it became part of the Diocese of Portsmouth and has really been welcomed into the community. I think the church is regarded as important to Tadley. Father Tansey, who came to the town just under a year ago, said he has enjoyed his time in Tadley. He said: I have only been here since November, but already I have a good sense of it being part of the Tadley com- munity. I was originally in Buckland and Faringdon parish in Oxfordshire, which was, in some ways, a more rural area but Tadley doesnt feel alien to me there is some beautiful countryside around. Its very much in the centre of the community, so I have no complaints. Father Tansey is hoping the event will bring even more vis- itors to the church on a weekly basis. I think we are developing a really good relationship with the people, he said. We need to do around 50,000 worth of maintenance and we are coming together well on that. There has been an excellent tives on board. response and we had an The day was a good celebra- anniversary committee set up tion, with various people in with many different representa- attendence. Can you help nail grave cash thief? BASINGSTOKE police have issued this image of a man who committed a despicable and disgusting crime in the borough. A homeowner had cash saved to buy a new headstone for her parents grave stolen during a distraction burglary in Preston Candover on Wednesday September 16. PC Natalie Stallworthy of the Basingstoke Priority Crime Unit said: We would like to hear from anyone who thinks they know who this man is, or has any information about this offence. This was a despicable and disgusting crime committed by men with absolutely no respect or morals. These criminals prey on the vulnerable people within our communities and we want to hear from anyone who has any information so we can prevent any more of these cowardly crimes being committed. You should always verify the Race-hate graffiti on van GRAFFITI painted on a van in Basingstoke may be racially-motivated, say police, who are appealing for help tracking down the cul- prit. The scrawlings appeared overnight on Saturday September 19 while the vehi- cle was parked outside Bhuller Stores in St Peters Road, South Ham. PC Sarah Stokes from the Basingstoke Targeted Patrol Team said: We believe this graffiti to be racially-moti- vated and are appealing for anyone who has any informa- tion to contact us. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and we will take action against anyone found to be committing these types of offences. The penalties for racially- motivated offences are ser- vere and, if convicted, the offender could end up with a criminal record. The people who commit these acts may think it is amusing and just a bit of fun but it can have a serious impact on the victims quality of life. I would like anyone with information to contact me so I can ensure the people respon- sible for this matter are dealt with. If you have information, call PC Stokes at Basingstoke police station on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity, anony- mously, on 0800 555 111.
