Thursday October 1st - Wednesday October 7th, 2009 5 Companies struggling in the crunch are thrown a lifeline Council launches matched-funding NEWS BITES scheme to ease cash-flow problems Park lifes great BASINGSTOKE council is throwing a lifeline to local businesses as the borough battles the credit crunch. An initiative was launched today (Thursday) which hands out funds to entrepreneurs across the area. It is hoped the scheme will help small and medium-sized firms to cope with cash-flow issues by offering up to 25,000 at affordable rates of interest. The qualify for the funding, called Lifeline, companies need to raise half the money they want from banks or other finan- cial bodies. The council-lead ini- tiative guarantees the balance. Council leader Andrew Finney said: We know that local busi- nesses are struggling to survive in the current economic climate, often for the want of a small amount to get them through a temporary cash-flow crisis. This new Lifeline fund could be the vital difference between them going under or surviving and thriving. It is vital that the council sup- ports these local employers to safeguard local jobs and ensure the boroughs future prosperity. As the council set up 3en as a unique independent fund to encourage entrepreneurs, it is only fitting that through this REPORT by Simon Moss organisation we should set up another innovative fund to help businesses to survive the eco- nomic downturn. Fund manager Nick Sharpe said: The Lifeline fund is now open for business and we are keen to hear from sustainable companies that are struggling for working capital. Where we believe there is a real case for support and matched funding can be achieved from third parties, wed like to help. The first of its kind in the coun- try, 3en Ventures was set up by the council as an independent fund for entrepreneurs in early stage information and commu- nications technology businesses and has already helped to sup- port the establishment of a number of high-potential busi- nesses in the borough. Companies wanting more information on the fund should visit www.lifelinefund.co.uk or call Nick Sharpe on 01256 636451. The initiative was launched at the Be Inspired business Conference, held at Chineham Park. NEW companies on Chineham business park have called it a great place to work. The site welcomed more new busi- nesses in the first six months of this year than during the whole of last year. Newcomer John Evemy said: I enjoy working at Chineham Park because it is like working in the countryside. Farmers site BUYING Hampshire produce is easier than ever, thanks to a new website. Smiles after the miles STAFF at a Hook business have completed a gruelling challenge in the saddle for charity. The team of six employees of Virgin Media cycled from Lands End to John OGroats in just over a week with the aim of raising 20,000 for Naomi House Hospice and Cancer Research. The feat normally takes over two weeks but The Big Stride riders achieved it in almost half the time. Big Stride team leader Mark Ryder said: This cycle ride was one of our biggest chal- lenges yet and the team has done tremendously well to compete it within our eight- day target. We pushed our- selves right to the limit and are absolutely delighted with the generous donations received so far and hope they continue to come in. Council leader Ken Thornber said: It is a great privilege for me to pres- ent these distinguished for- mer councillors with their deserved new titles. Each of them has worked tirelessly to represent the residents within their wards and the county of Hampshire as a whole. Creative thinking: the key to success MICROSOFT, Hewlett Packard, CNN, MTV and FedEx all huge companies but what else do they have in common? Answer: they all started in a time of economic downturn. A recession can mean opportu- nity; an opportunity to re-evalu- ate, to stop and think about where we are going; to re- assess our values and priori- ties. It can be an opportunity to take a new direction in work and life.
