Thursday October 1st - Wednesday October 7th, 2009 3 Two taken to hospital after brawl TWO men were left need- ing hospital treatment after a brawl in Kingsclere last month. A fight broke out at a pri- vate party being held at the George and Horn pub in Basingstoke Road at 10.30pm on Saturday September 19. During the fight, two men were assaulted and required hospital treatment. Detective Constable Rebecca Martinez of Basingstoke CID said: This was a serious incident and we believe that other people were also assaulted at the pub. There were a number of people at the pub at the time and we are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spo- ken to us. We would ask anyone with any information to contact us as soon as possible. A 19-year-old man has been arrested and bailed in con- nection with the incident. Anyone with information about the brawl is urged to call Det Con Martinez at Basingstoke police station on 101 or call the Crimestoppers charity, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. Delay fixing light is blamed for fall BASINGSTOKE councils fail- ure to fix a faulty street lamp has been blamed for injuries to a man who tripped and fell in the dark. The accident happened to the vice-chairman of Oakridge West Community Centre, who received scrapes and bruises. Now the centre is considering taking action against the bor- ough council. Centre secretary Alan Roden told the Observer he first report- ed the fault with the lamp out- side the building in May last year and was left baffled by the process of reporting the fault. Under the lamp it was as black as the ace of spades, he said. Borough councillors Paul Harvey and Laura James inter- vened and the lamp on borough council land has now been fixed. Mr Roden said: Thanks to the councillors, it is now working but I first brought it up with the bor- ough council in May 2008. I must have gone in to see them five or six times since then and I got the impression they were unsure whose job it was to fix the light. I was told I needed the num- NEWS BITES Drama groups autumn play A BOROUGH drama group is busy preparing for its autumn offering. REPORT by Simon Moss ber of the lamppost but if you can find one then you are a better man than me! I was also told it was the countys responsibility but they said it was the boroughs and all the while I just got dizzy. He added: A letter is being pre- pared for the council and it may be a case of taking this further. Hampshire County Council maintains most of Basingstokes lampposts but Cllr James said confusion over this particular site contributed to the delay getting the work done. She told the Observer: If we dont know who owns which lamppost, the process of report- ing faults becomes very difficult. It is hard for residents who have to go and find a number then ring the council who give you another number to ring it is too confusing. There needs to be a better system in place, as this incident highlights many flaws in the system. Cllr James continued: I am delighted it has been fixed but I Still time to give to cancer cause BASINGSTOKE residents can still give to a charitable cause. The Worlds Biggest Coffee morning, staged last week, raised thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support but by texting a number, resi- dents have the opportunity to donate more money. Text DRINK to 70123 and Macmillan will receive 2.80. The fixers: Borough councillors Paul Harvey and Laura James am concerned a resident has fallen and hurt himself would it have happened if the light had been working? It is not good that it has taken this long for some- thing to happen but the process is confusing. The council claimed it was first aware of the fault when Cllr Harvey contacted it last month and had the light fixed within a week. Corporate director Dorcas Bunton said: We were first informed of the light not working on a lamppost in the Oakridge West Community Centre car park on Monday September 21. We immediately contacted our contractor who scheduled a visit to the site for Tuesday September 22, when the broken bulb was replaced. The borough council advises that residents always contact Hampshire County Council s street lighting telephone hotline on 0800 50 60 60 to report any faults.
