The Italians have really upped their game in the last few years providing us with the Fiat panda, the ever-popular Fiat 500 and now the Alfa Romeo Mito. Much of an Alfa s appeal is in the styling and the Mito is no exception, although not quite as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the range, it is still unmistakably Alfa. With prices starting at a competitive 10,995 for the base 1.4 junior Alfa could be on to a winner. Base model standard spec includes air con, CD/MP3, 16 alloys and even an alcohol test kit. The package becomes even more attractive when you take into account that the base 1.4 Fiesta breaches the 12,000 mark. Our test model was the 14,545 1.6 JTDm Lusso, which just undercuts the equivalent Mini 1.6D for price. The diesel unit is quiet at high speeds and fairly unobtrusive on tick over. The slightly underwhelming acceleration sees the Mito to 62mph in 9.9 seconds and is accom- panied with usual diesel turbo lag. The six-speed gearbox allows plenty of opportunity for frugal motorway miles; our test car achieved an average 42mpg www.yourbasingstoke.co. Twisty roads are no problem for the Mito, and excellent grip and poise see it up there with its competitors. Flick the chunky DNA button on the centre con- sole and throttle response increases along with a sharper feel to the steer- ing. Whilst the Mito is fun, it also does a decent job of being refined; this is partly due to the premium feel of the interior. The quality of fit and finish are very good, and it seems that Alfa have taken care of the quality issues that have troubled the brand in the past. The interior is not over styled; it has all the right curves in the right places with plenty of soft touch materials and an all round solid feel. The standard stereo system is excellent unlike the rear visi- bility, which is particularly poor, a vic- tim of the Mito s curvy rear end. However this hardly detracts from what is a very capable slice of Alfa magic at a very competitive price. The Mito was tested courtesy of Alfa Romeo Whitequay, at 26, Portman Road, Reading.
