Pam Ayres www.datedatedate.co.uk Pam makes a welcome return to The Anvil on Thursday 1 October. Recently featured in a list of Britains 20 Funniest Women, one of Pams poems, I Wish Id Looked After Me Teeth, was also voted into the Top Ten of a BBC poll to find the UKs 100 Favourite Comic Poems. In 2005, Pam celebrated 30 years as a professional entertainer; it was 1975 when she made her first appearance on the ITV talent show Opportunity Knocks. This proved to be the start of an incred- ible career for a unique enter- tainer. There is no other contem- porary entertainer whose career was established by writing and performing comic verse. Pam is now a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio 4 in programmes such as Just A Minute, Loose End and Quote Unquote. 2009 has seen the third series of her own Radio 4 programme Ayres On The Air, a new DVD recording and a UK tour of around 50 venues this autumn. Thursday October 1 The Haymarket MUSIC Buddy Holly and The Cricketers Buddy Holly and The Cricketers, at The Haymarket on Thursday 1 October, have delighted audiences across the world for seventeen years and are sure to have you singing along to such timeless classics as Thatll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, It Doesnt Matter Anymore, Raining In My Heart and Oh Boy! The show is not a tribute act but a mix of music with improvised and scripted comedy featuring some of the finest and talented actor- musicians in the business, whose combined credits include hit West End shows Buddy, Lennon, Return To The Forbidden Planet and Jailhouse Rock. Buddy Holly and The Cricketers were recently endorsed as Britains most popular Buddy Holly act when they guest-starred on BBC Ones The One and Only. Tickets for Buddy Holly and The Cricketers are priced at 15; over 60s, under 16s and students pay 13. For more infor- mation or for tickets, call the Anvil Arts box office on 01256 844244. Or use the Anvil Arts website www.anvilarts.org.uk or the ticket fax 01256 366900. The show now opens with one of Britains most successful interna- tional folk-rock bands, The Strawbs, performing a special acoustic set of their classic albums and hit material including a preview of some new songs. They are followed by Martin Turners Wishbone Ash. Martin Turner is the founder member, lead vocalist and creative force of Wishbone Ash and who will per- form such standards as Blowin Free and Argus. And then after the second interval will be Focus, with their unique blend of progressive rock. Focus hit the charts at the start of the seventies as the most successful Dutch rock exports. Hits came in the form of Hocus Pocus, House of the King, Sylvia and many more. This year marks the 40th anniver- sary of the release of the first Strawbs album. The Strawbs acoustic show will consist of David Cousins, Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk, the front-line of the classic 1970s line-up of the band. In the early 1970s Strawbs scored chart success in Britain with huge albums such as Grave New World and Bursting at the Seams. From the mid-1970s as the group concentrated their attention on the United States and Canada where their albums, including the classics Hero and Heroine and Ghosts, spent over fifty two weeks on the Billboard charts. Strawbs toured with the likes of Santana, Peter Frampton, The Eagles, REO Speedwagon, Joe Walsh, Blue Oyster Cult, King Crimson, and Frank Zappa.
