Stuart Francis and Peter Fitzmaurice died when the light aircraft crashed at Tangley near Andover at around 12.40pm on Sunday September 20. The single-engined, fixed- wing plane got into difficulties soon after taking off from near Whitchurch. REPORT by Simon Moss The plane was believed to be travelling in the direction of the West Country. The family of 60-year-old Stuart said in a statement: Stuart has been passionate about flying since childhood. He gained his private pilots licence in 1991 and was an experienced and meticulous pilot. Advertise your vehicle, property, or unwanted items place your advert online at He was a member of several flying groups and had many friends in the world of aviation. He was known for his enthu- siasm and commitment. He was a compassionate, caring and devoted husband and brother and his loss is a devastating blow to his family. Stuarts familys thoughts and sympathy are with the fam- ily of Peter Fitzmaurice. Stuarts family wish to be left in private in order to deal with their grief. Meanwhile, the family of 67- year-old Peter Fitzmaurice said: The family of Peter Fitzmaurice is coming to terms with their sad loss and appreci- ate the support they are receiv- ing from friends. They ask that their privacy is respected at this time. She said over the next few years many power stations will reach the end of their lives, or be forced to shut due to EU law, and claimed the government has failed to ensure replacements are available. Basingstoke is braced for more than 16,000 new homes by the year 2026 and will bare the brunt of house building in the south east. According to Maria, the blackouts would most likely occur in early evening during the winter months, hitting res- idents when the need for elec- tricity is greatest. Energy, water supply and other important elements of infrastructure are not being planned well enough, or receiving enough investment, to match the level of house building required by the gov- ernment, she said. We must act quickly to tackle the energy crisis, by generating capacity, improv- ing energy efficiency by insu- lating peoples homes, adopt- ing the latest green technol- ogy and making Britains energy policy a matter of national security. Councillors vote against Sweep away the risk raising their allowances of a winter tragedy COUNTY councillors have voted against an increase in their allowances despite a rec- ommendation from an outside body. Hampshire councils cabinet unanimously voted against the rise at a meeting last month. The Independent Remuneration Body had suggested an increase of more than 4,000 a year, bringing a members allowances to 20,817. Cllr Ken Thornber said: As the effects of the recession and money worries continue to prey heavily on peoples minds, cou- pled with the ever decreasing grant we receive from govern- ment, it is essential that we con- tinue to do all we can to ensure residents receive value for money by ploughing every penny into the high quality serv- ices that Hampshire residents have come to expect from the county council. Cabinet members indicated they were not minded to accept the recommendation. MEMBERS of Hampshire Fire and Rescue used last weeks Chimney Fire Safety Week to issue a warning to householders. Each winter, crews are called to fires across Hampshire that could have been prevented, according to the SOS service. Residents are being urged to have their chimney swept reg- ularly to avoid fires. Station manager Jim Clarke said: With the colder winter months looming, people will Read this newspaper online at www.yourbasingstoke.co. In order to keep you and your family safe from fire, you need to take necessary steps such as ensuring your chim- ney is swept regularly, depend- ing upon what fuel you burn, and I would urge all house- holders to have a working smoke alarm in their home. Latest statistics show there are approximately 6,000 chim- ney fires a year in England but most are preventable. Wild fundraiser A BASINGSTOKE group will be going wild for charity later this month.
