Thursday October 1st - Wednesday October 7th, 2009 13 Wondering GREEN MATTERS our series on people working for a greener borough what to do with that old telly? REPORT Still by Elaine ITS TIME to dig out your broken televisions, old ket- tles and used batteries to be collected for recycling! Basingstoke and Deane Borough Councils second waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collection will start in October and the council is encouraging resi- dents who qualify to support the scheme. Earlier this year, the council became the first local author- ity in the country to team up with Midexs free WEEECollect.IT service. The first collection of the year-long trial took place in July and saw just under 40 tonnes of WEEE collected from around 48,000 house- holds. The second quarterly collec- tion is now under way and the council is encouraging people to use the opportunity to get rid of their old or broken elec- trical or electronic equipment, or anything that takes batter- ies or has an electric plug. Residents included in the trial will receive a leaflet dur- ing the week commencing October 12 giving a set collec- tion date and clear instruc- tions on what to do. For further information on the WEEE collection service visit www.basingstoke.gov.uk/ go/recycle or call 01256 844844. THIS month, Im featuring the work of Popley Conservation Volunteers. They do a great deal of hard work in their community but are in need of new volunteers right now. The group, formed over five years ago, looks after local wildlife habitats in the area, including Basing Wood, Chineham Park and White Horse Ponds, (Popley Ponds). The Popley group is particu- larly special as it is responsible for maintaining the habitat of great crested newts. The newts are a protected species and inhabit the Popley Ponds a site of importance for nature conservation, (SINC). This area is a nature reserve and home to over 4,000 amphib- ians. In addition to the great crested newts, the area is also home to badgers, rabbits and roe and Muntjac deer. Nearly 20 differ- ent bird species have been recorded in the area, including starlings and skylarks. Conservation volunteering is a great way to socialise and feel a real part of your community. You can give as little as two hours a month and there are further opportunities for scien- tific study and access to a wide variety of training courses if you choose. Whatever help and time you NEWS BITES The wild bunch Show visitors lucky day HARTLEY Wintney resident Karen Briggs scooped top prize at this years Romsey Show. She won 500 to spend at Festival Place shop- ping centre in Basingstoke. Karen said: I was absolutely thrilled to win. I am never nor- mally that lucky. I hope I have the willpower to save it for Christmas! Residents raise safety concerns COMMUNITY safety issues were raised at an event in Old Basing at the weekend. Old Basing and Lychpit Safer Neighbour-hoods Team met at the village hall to take resi- dents questions on Saturday. PC Tracey Read said: We were glad as many residents as possible came along and meet us, not only to talk about their concerns and issues but to take advantage of the range of advice we have on offer. A 29-year-old woman from Brockenhurst died at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on Tuesday last week follow- ing a crash outside Bramshill police training college on September 15. The woman had been driving a green Renault Megane. Police wish to trace the driver of a tractor who was believed to be in the area at the time of the crash, at 1.15pm. Acting sergeant Mark Clarke said: The tractor driver may have been a witness when the Renault left the road and col- lided with a tree. He or she could have infor- mation which is vital to our enquiry into the cause of this fatal collision. Anyone with information about the accident, which hap- pened on the B3011, is urged to call Operation Drawing at Farnborough Roads Policing Unit on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity, anony- mously, on 0800 555 111.
