Thursday August 27th - Wednesday September 2nd 2009 9 A-level grades up again COLLEGE students across Oxfordshire celebrated another record batch of grades as fig- ures showed A-level results had improved for the 27th year in a row. Statistics released by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) revealed 26.7 per cent of all exam entrants achieved an A grade as nervous students trooped into colleges across the county to collect their individual results with fingers crossed on Thursday August 20. At Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, students and staff were celebrating after the number of pupils achieving C to A grades increased for the fourth year running. Vice-principal Lesley Donoghue said: It s such a pleasure to see students and Arson spree at village ARSONISTS have struck multiple times in Eynsham setting bales of hay, recy- cling bins and grass cut- tings on fire in a series of blazes around the town. Thames Valley police are warning people living in west Oxfordshire to be vigilant fol- lowing the latest fire, on Wednesday August 19, when firefighters were called to attend a blaze in a field off Culbridge Road at 7.30pm. When they arrived, they dis- covered 11 bales of hay had been set alight. A team of six firefighters were detained at the scene for five hours put- ting out the fire. The previous day, police dis- covered 13 recycling bins had been deliberately set on fire in a car park in Back Lane at 4.31am. Then, at 3.45pm, fire- fighters attended another arson in woodland off Beech Road, where some grass cut- tings had been deliberately set alight. PC Richard Conner said: This type of activity is not only illegal but potentially life threatening, and anyone found setting fires will be dealt with severely. I would urge anyone living in this area who saw anyone acting suspiciously over the past week or who sees any- one doing anything suspi- cious in the future, to contact us as soon as possible. If you have information, call PC Conner via the Thames Valley police enquiry centre on 08458 505505, or Crimestoppers, anony- mously, on 0800 555111. SPECIAL REPORT by Ric Sumner teachers rewarded for their hard work, especially when the challenges facing school-leavers are tougher than. No less than 98 per cent of stu- dents taking A levels at the col- lege achieved a pass at grades A to E, a six per cent rise on 2008, with three per cent more stu- dents achieving A grades. The happy students included Jack Farrell and Karen Fuller, who said they planned to study for degrees in primary educa- tion, Leoni Merry, who is off to study law at De Montford University, and Chris Dempsey, who is continuing on to do his NVQ level 4 in accounting at the college. There were celebrations else- where too, with 10 per cent more of students at St Gregory the Great School in east Oxford achieving the higher grades. Oxford School in Glanville Road also saw a steep rise in its results, with eight per cent of pupils reaching A and B grades. Across the country, the JCQ said 75.1 per cent of pupils achieved at least a C in their results. But Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce Group criticised the focus on increasing pass rates, saying that more focus should be placed on ensuring young people are getting the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. Claire Prosser, policy execu- tive for the chamber, said: The goal for education and training must be on getting young people equipped for employment, and continuing the annual debate on pass rates will not achieve this goal. Such statistics just tick gov- ernment and educational boxes and do not necessarily reflect the real employability of an indi- vidual. Although students are receiv- ing record results, the question lies in how their education has prepared them for the job mar- ket. Anxious about your future? YOUNG people left uncertain about their future options after receiving their A-level and GCSE results can access a wealth of information and advice through Oxfordshire County Council s Connexions service. Connexions Oxfordshire gives guidance via trained pro- fessionals to teenagers about opportunities, jobs, apprentice- ships and courses. They can get face-to-face support at various points all over Oxfordshire through Connexions centres, youth cen- tre access points and Connexions outreach locations. Connexions centres are located in Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Didcot, Oxford and Witney and also produce job bulletins about opportunities in their areas. Cllr Louise Chapman, the county council s cabinet mem- ber for children, young people and families, said: "I would urge any young person who is uncertain about their future to get in touch and discuss what options are open to them. Connexions is an excellent tool for finding out what sup- port and services are available." Visit www.connexionsoxford- shire.com for further informa- tion or email askconnexions oxfordshire.gov.uk.
