www.youroxfordshire.co. Thursday August 27th - Wednesday September 2nd 2009 47 Sport F1 NEWS Button fails to reign in Spain FORMULA One champi- onship leader Jensen Button could only finish seventh as Brawn teammate Rubens Barrichello triumphed at the Spanish grand Prix in Valencia on Sunday. Barrichello, 37, closed the gap on Button to just 18 points with the victory, his first for five years. Reigning British champion Lewis Hamilton, starting from pole for the first time this year, fin- ished second. Debut grief for Ford MIKE Ford s first game in charge of Oxford City saw his side go down 3 - 1 in front of a crowd of more than 700 at Nuneaton Town on Saturday. With Ford making a number of player and positional changes, City were more than equal to the home side in the early encounters. Andy Baird came close to giv- ing City the lead midway through the first half when he beat the offside trap, only to see his low shot blocked by Darren Acton in the Nuneaton goal. Nuneaton took the lead in the 43rd minute when James Armson s shot took a wicked deflection leaving Richard Knight stranded in the City goal. Soon after the restart, indeci- sion in the City defence allowed Armson the simplest of tap-ins to double the advantage for the home side. The introduction of Dave Savage saw City gain the initia- tive in midfield. City s pressure paid off on 52 minutes. Liam Malone s specu- lative 20-yard effort looked to be well covered by Acton in the Nuneaton goal but, inexplicably, the keeper let the shot slip PICTURE COURTESY OF Michael Allen SPORTS REPORT by Michael Allen through his hands and roll into the net. The visitors were in the ascen- dant and looked for the equaliser. Andy Baird saw his goal-bound header hit Acton s back with the keeper well beaten and then substitute Lee Steele fired in from six yards, only to see a combination of Stuart Pierpoint and Gareth Dean block his effort on the line. There was a strong suspicion that a hand was used to block Steele s shot but City s protests for a penalty were waved away. As City committed more play- ers forward in search of an equaliser, Nuneaton broke away and Gez Murphy slotted the ball past Richard Knight in the City goal just before the final whistle, giving the home side a some- what flattering victory margin. City will be keen to get back to winning ways as they face two important local derby s over the bank holiday weekend, travel- ling to Banbury United on Saturday and entertaining Didcot Town on the Monday. FOOTBALL NEWS Merritt quits Justin Merritt FOOTBALL NEWS For the ladies CARTERTON Football Club has set up a new ladies team for the coming season. The side will play in the Thames Valley Counties Women s Football League on a Sunday afternoons, and training is already under way on Wednesday evenings. If you are interested in play- ing football, getting fit and having fun, call Gary Oakey, Carterton ladies football coordinator, on 01993 846911 or email gary.oakeytalktalk. net The club is looking for new members aged 16-plus. Oxford City s Andy Baird holds off Nuneaton s Gareth Dean as he drives into the area JUSTIN Merritt has resigned as manager of Oxford City after back-to-back defeats in the opening two fixtures of the Southern League Premier Division. Merritt said he had failed to get the response he was looking for from some of the players and cited work com- mitments as the reason for standing down following the 1-0 defeat to Cambridge City and the 2-1 reversal at Hemel Hempstead. His assistant, Mike Ford, took control of City s game on Saturday against Nuneaton Borough. Ford had a long period as a player at rivals Oxford United, playing 338 games, as well as two spells as caretaker manager. Memorial cup for hero Dale WHEATLEY Rugby Club is launching an annual cup event in tribute to former player and Marine Dale Gostick, who was killed while serving his coun- try in southern Afghanistan. Dale, who died at the Sangin crossing of the Helmand River on May 25 last year, will be remembered with the holding of the Dale Gostick Memorial Cup. Featuring a Wheatley XV play- ing against an invited side, the first match sees the home team taking on Littlemore RFC at Wheatley s Holton ground on September 5, kicking off at 4pm. Featuring some of Dale s for- mer teammates as well as new and old players, there will also be a man of the match award cho- sen by D a l e s father, John. Dale joined the club as a t e e n a g e r, going on to play for the first team. Club chair- man Steve Dale Gostick Kemp said: Dale was very committed to his family, his forces colleagues as well as to his friends at home. This was hugely demon- strated by him turning out to play for Wheatley whenever he was on leave from the marines, whether he had just returned home from Plymouth, Afghanistan or wherever he had been at the time. As well as remembering Dale, the day will also remind us of the ethos of clubs like Wheatley so well demonstrated by Dale friendship, fun, loyalty and teamwork. Wheatley RUFC aims to continue to provide rugby playing opportunities to the local community, based on these core values. Wheatley will be raising money on the day for forces charity Help for Heroes. W i l l p o w e r s t o v i c t o r y i n Z o l d e r d e b u t Will Bratt BANBURY S Will Bratt scored a superb maiden victory in the Euroseries 3000 race at Zolder in Belgium. In an outstanding lights-to-flag perform- ance, the 21-year-old EmiliodeVillota.com driver took the chequered flag on lap 27, eight seconds clear of Italian racer Fabio Onidi. The Oxon racer lies fourth in the driver s championship after his victory in the sixth round of the championship, achieved on his first visit to the Zolder track. It s such a good feeling to achieve our first win, it s fantastic for me, for everyone at the team and hopefully marks a major turning point in the season for us, said Will. To finally get the win under our belts is a major boost and it s no more than the team has deserved, as they ve done an incredible job all year. We re really pleased with such a strong finish to the weekend. Will s next outing in the PartyPokerRacing.it Euroseries 3000 Championship is on September 12 and 13, at Valencia in Spain.
