Read this newspaper online at www.youroxfordshire.co. Thursday August 27th - Wednesday September 2nd 2009 3 I was a teen boozer Tory leader talks about his rebellious days at Eton TORY leader David Cameron has told how teenage drinking led him heading in the wrong direction as a rebellious teenager at Eton College. In an interview with women s glossy magazine Grazia, the Witney MP admitted he drank too much between the ages of 14 and 16, was caught smoking behind the bike sheds and failed to do very well in his O-level exams. "When I was 14, 15, 16, I was doing things that teenagers do in terms of drinking too much, being caught having the odd fag, things like that ... I didn t do particularly well in my O-levels but I was fortunate enough that 16 was a turning point for me, admitted Mr Cameron. NEWS BITES REPORT by Ric Sumner I was, in some ways, heading in the wrong direction and I pulled myself up and headed in the right one. Mr Cameron, 42, went on to study philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University, getting a first class degree. But his confession is reminis- cent of former Tory leader William Hague, who was widely ridiculed in the media when he claimed he used to down 14 pints of beer as a teen. In the same interview, Mr Cameron also spoke about the effect on his family of the death of his son Ivan, who died aged Brothers Sam, seven, and Lucas Racz, five, muck in at the Barracks Lane Community Garden six in February this year. "So much of our life was arranged around Ivan the void is immense, he told the magazine. But also, you are suddenly able to do things you couldn t do before, like walk across a muddy field, perhaps, and you find yourself there quickly and it s like oh, here we are followed by a feeling of guilt because you re having a good time and he s not there." The Tory leader also paid trib- ute to his wife Samantha for helping him keep a sense of per- spective about life in politics. Because she s busy design- ing the next hit handbag or whatever, she has an objectivity that is incredibly useful in a politician s life, he said. Driver charged over fatal crash A TEENAGE motorist has been charged with causing death by careless driving while over the alcohol limit. Gabriella Edmondson, 18, of Penn, High Wycombe, has been bailed to appear at Oxford Magistrates Court on September 4. Four teenagers were travel- ling in a silver Toyota Yaris when the car crashed into a wood by the A34 between the Pear Tree and Botley junctions in Oxford on April 7. Passenger Grace Hadman, 17, a pupil at St Edwards School in Oxford, was killed in the crash, while a second teenager, 18-year-old Joe Robinson, was seriously injured. Kids muck in to help green cause OXFORD families were invited to do their bit to help the environment on Saturday by visiting a fun day as part of a new green campaign. Members of the project Muck In4Life and local volunteers took part in Breathing Spaces, a family event where children had the chance to try face-painting, artwork and have fun at the Barracks Lane Community Garden on Cowley Road. John Green, a volunteer at the Barracks Lane garden, said: What you notice about the chil- dren who get involved here is how rapidly they become very enthusiastic about gardening, and it s a brilliant way of chan- nelling their energies. Often children who might be difficult under other circum- stances will be wonderful when they are getting involved in tending to the garden. Children can really blossom when they re getting involved with doing something worth- while in the great outdoors. It is also lovely to see how young people and adults can learn from each other. Adults may well be passing on their gardening skills but the young people can also remind the grown-ups just how much fun mucking about in the garden can be. Muck In4Life has been organ- ised by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in a bid to get families and individuals out of the house and involved in volunteer con- servation work. TWO men have been arrested in connec- tion with a series of burglaries across Oxfordshire in the early hours of Friday. The first theft happened at Forbuoys newsagents in Market Place, Wantage, at 3.30am, where thieves forced entry into the shop and stole cigarettes. Between 3am and 9am, police believe the same thieves entered a house in Great Close Road, Yarnton, through an open win- dow, stealing a wallet containing credit cards and cash, car keys and a Porsche Cayenne 4x4 car. The third burglary took place at 4.40am in Witney Road, Long Hanborough, where thieves reversed a car through the front of the Suzuki garage and stole cigarettes. At about 4.50am, thieves then forced the front door of Londis newsagents in Hailey Road, Witney, and stole cigarettes. The last burglary happened at 5.15am when thieves again forced entry into Martins newsagents in Burford Road, Carterton. Det Sgt Craig Kirby said: Two men, aged 24 and 28, were arrested this morning in Cheltenham and we have also recovered the stolen Porsche in Cheltenham. They are currently being questioned by officers. We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone around these locations acting suspiciously, or may have seen the break-ins taking place. If you can help police, call Det Sgt Kirby via 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers, anony- mously, on 0800 555111.
