Now in it s fourth decade, the show has raised more than 250,000 for local good causes and is organised entirely by vol- unteers from the village, regu- larly attracting more than 10,000 visitors to fields overlooking the famous bronze age figure of the Uffington White Horse. While the wing walkers are sure to wow crowds from the skies there will be plenty of entertainment on the ground too, with the Star Rhapsody Steel Band giving events a real Caribbean carnival atmosphere on Sunday, and the Southern Syncopaters Jazz Band on Monday. Another new event this year will be an elegant Dressage and Side Saddle Display, and organ- isers hope to have a flypast by the world s only flying Vulcan Bomber. All the Show s regular favourites will be back including the shire horses, historic vehi- cles, helicopter rides, grand fun- fair, dozens of craft stalls and more. Admission to the show is 8 for adults, with concessions. For more information visit www.whitehorseshow.co.u or call 01367 820393. OUTDOOR EVENT OUTDOOR EVENTS by Ric Sumner Magical days out BILLING itself as the greatest day out of the sum- mer, the Towersey Village Festival Showground prom- ises a magical day out and an unashamed celebration of street art in a unique Festival atmosphere between August 28 and 31. Set in rolling countryside near Thame and with well over 100 stalls, food and a real ale bar, circus skills, face painting and the unique musical, colourful, sunshine atmosphere of Towersey Festival there should be something to cater for all tastes. An authors legacy could get fiction prize HOLLY Hogan, is a care- babe who s had enough of the system. She turns her back on the care home and her foster parents and adopting a new name and a new image, cour- tesy of a blond wig, she takes to the road. If she can only find her Mam then everything will be ok. The teenage Holly is all too easy to identify with - railing against the injustice of her situ- ation and the mogits (miser- able old gits) who make her life miserable. The wig transforms her into Solace a sharp-talking girl with slim-slam hips; the kind of girl who can turn her own life around as easily as the SOLACE OF THE ROAD BY SIOBHAN DOWD Review by Katie Paxton-Doggett heads of the men she meets. But underneath we can see Holly s vulnerability and hear the distinctive voice of teenage angst. She sets off to find her way from London to Ireland down the A40. After taking the London Tube to Oxford, she spends a night in the city and I enjoyed identifying the loca- tions. I particularly liked the description of the museum, obviously the Pitt Rivers, and Holly s fear which reminded me of my daughter s reaction on her first visit there. The journey is eventful and leads Holly to the truth which unfolds in a series of unsettling flashbacks. I found this coming of age novel a gripping read. Throughout, I had the feeling that something awful was going to happen to her. I was as relieved as Holly with the guardian angels that she encountered along the way. Tragically, the author Siobhan Dowd, died in 2007 aged only 47 of breast cancer.
