18 Thursday August 27th - Wednesday September 2nd 2009 www.youroxfordshire.co. Letters Tell us what you think online at www.youroxfordshire.co. Citys the loo-ser ON SATURDAY, I spent a great after- noon at the Elder Stubbs Allotment Festival near Florence Park in east Oxford and was pleased (and amazed) to see that after almost a year the council has finally repaired and re- opened the parks public loos, which local residents and I have been cam- paigning to have fixed since the spring. While grateful to the council for doing it, it still amazes residents I speak to that it has taken so long. Although the councils formal con- sultation on their wider proposals to cut large numbers of Oxfords public loos has now closed, Id still urge resi- dents to tell councillors their views, and encourage them to spend a penny and maintain the citys loos, rather than going through with cur- rent plans which rely instead on shops and businesses to open theirs to the public. They risk leaving areas of our city without facilities and with increasing anti-social behaviour problems. I have been calling on councillors to re-think these badly thought-out proposals for some time and to maintain existing facilities alongside a rolling pro- gramme of replacing them with auto- matic loos, which are largely self- cleaning, can have longer opening hours and which are easier to manage properly. Going through with these cuts and closing important local facilities is a short-term financial fix, not a long- term solution. Send us your letter by any of the following methods: email it to: newsyouroxfordshire.co fill in the form on our website: www.youroxfordshire.co. or post it to: Letters, Oxford Journal, 9-11 Cholswell Court, Abingdon, Oxfordshire OX13 6HX Find time to care ELEVEN million people tell researchers that they would volunteer if they were asked well I am asking! This year s Make a Difference Day on Saturday October 31 is the nation s biggest day of volunteering and we need help on thousands of projects. Littered river banks, neglected grass verges and safe play areas for children need your help. Or why not bake a cake for a neighbour, offer manicures for hospital patients, arrange visits to a gallery or help save a hedgehog by building a home? This is the 14th Make a Difference Day organised by CSV, the UK s lead- ing volunteering charity. More than half a million people have taken part so far. You can register for Make a Difference Day now to receive free resources to help create an inspira- tional volunteer project. So, whether you want to take part with your com- pany, school, community group, or even go it alone with your own ran- dom act of kindness, get in touch now by visiting www.csv.org.uk/differen or calling Freephone 0800 284 533. Letter of the week Eat your words, Benn DEFRA secretary Hilary Benn has recently talked about the UK becom- ing more self-sufficient in its food pro- duction and has stated: "It s about peo- ple eating more food seasonally." Disappointing, therefore, that the government does not practice what it preaches. As part of its Rural Manifesto campaign to promote British farmers and producers, the Countryside Alliance wrote to govern- ment departments, asking how much of the produce they serve is British. The Foreign Office said no detailed breakdown exists of individual resi- dences and the Cabinet Office, which runs Number 10, said there is no information on whether the proportion of food procured in the past 12 months was domestically produced. Only the Treasury scored well and sources a high proportion of UK produce. This is simply not good enough. If the govern- ment is telling us all to eat British, they should lead by example. Talking about it is all very well but you can easily be found out, as the Prime Minister has been by saying in Parliament that we all know British bacon is best when the Cabinet Office hadn t bought a single rasher. Run for your life I AM writing to let your readers know that we still have places in the Great South Run this year. Taking place on October 25, the 10-mile course is suitable whether you have been running for some time or are a beginner looking to take on a new challenge. It is also a great way to raise money for the World Cancer Research Fund. Scientists estimate that about a third of the most common cancers could be prevented by being physi- cally active, following a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight. So not only will training for and taking part in the run help you get into the kind of habits that can reduce your own cancer risk but the money raised will help us con- tinue to fund research into the link between lifestyle and cancer. If you are interested in taking part in this year s Great South Run, visit www.wcrf-uk.org/fundrai or call 0207 343 4200. Do hurry, because places are going fast! Pete Waterman CSV Make a Difference Day, www.csv.org.uk/differen Raising the dough Natalie Tarrant Events Manager, World Cancer Research Fund Simon Hart Chief Executive, Countryside Alliance ON BEHALF of the Children s Trust, which has benefited from money raised during National Doughnut Week over the last five years, I would Ed Argar like to thank all those who have Conservative Parliamentary Candidate helped to make this fundraising event for Oxford East such a success. During this period, over 150,000 has been raised and it is anticipated that from this year s fundraising event in May a further 30,000 will be added to this total a fantastic achievement! Among those I would like to thank are the independent bakers across the UK who kindly donate a percent- age from doughnut sales during the week, the sponsor, BakeMark UK; the founder of National Doughnut Week, Christopher Freeman; businesses and community groups who held spe- cial doughnut-themed events and, finally, the kind-hearted public. I would also like to add a special thank you to Ainsley Harriott, who kindly lends his support to help raise aware- ness of the Children s Trust. The Children s Trust is a national charity, which provides care, educa- tion and therapy for children with multiple disabilities and complex health needs and is the UK s largest centre for residential rehabilitation of children and young people with an acquired brain injury. As a result of fundraising, the Children s Trust, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has recently opened a new residential, rehabilitation centre for children with an acquired brain injury. Over the years, money raised from the annual National Doughnut Week, has helped to contribute to important projects, which help make a differ- ence to the lives of these children.
