Red Kite Recycling and AD Health & Safety won a furnished office for a year as the top prize in the Southern Oxfordshire New Business Competition. South Oxfordshire District Council planning committee was due to meet last night (Wednesday) to discuss a planning application from Wates Homes Ltd for 106 homes on land west of Reading Road, in Winterbrook. Residents have argued that the proposals would overwhelm the local infrastructure and destroy the nature of the area, leading to increased traffic problems. In a report to the council, officers said councillors should reject the developer s proposals, because the site is not allocated for strategic development and would extend into and encroach upon the open coun- tryside on the edge of Wallingford detracting from the landscape set- ting of Winterbrook. The report also criticised the Wates application for failing to provide the proper infrastructure to support the development. Campaigners have formed pres- sure group Save Winterbrook, which handed over a petition of more than 200 signatures against the plans to the council earlier this week. The site is earmarked for develop- ment as homes before 2026 and is opposite Winterbrook House, where Agatha Christie lived between 1934 and her death in 1976. Cholsey Parish Council has also objected to the plans. Deputy chairman James Butler told the Journal: It s an inappropri- ate development for the site. It has not been planned for the benefit of the community. Bin collections HOUSEHOLDERS have been reminded by west Oxfordshire District Council that bin and recy- cling collections will be made a day later than usual during the August bank holiday week. Collections will take place between September 1 and 5 and will return to normal in the week beginning September 7. When he refused, they began to follow him. Det Con Rachel Carter, investigat- ing the incident, said: When the teenagers caught up with the man they tripped him up and, while he was on the ground, they kicked and punched him several times. They were eventually disturbed by a passing lorry and ran off. The victim then noticed his mobile phone had been stolen. We believe this incident is linked to three other robberies that have taken place in Cow Lane. Although arrests have been made in connec- tion with these robberies, we believe there may be a group of around 12 people involved in these crimes. I appeal to anyone who may have information about who these people are to contact police immediately. The other robberies in Cow Lane took place on July 26, August 3 and August 21. Three people have been arrested in connection with one of the robberies and bailed by police pending further enquiries. Anyone with information should contact Det Con Carter via the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111. Working out with the Green Gym GREEN-FINGERED Abingdon resi- dents are making the town s natural spaces a better place for everyone, thanks to the world s largest team of green volunteers. The Abingdon Green Gym was launched more than five years ago and has gone from strength to strength after being set up with the help of BTCV, the UK s leading volun- teering charity. The Green Gym is one of five in the county and more than 95 that have sprung up across the UK since the first one was launched in Sonning Common in 1998. Volunteering charity BTCV purchased tools for the group, which became self-man- aging after 18 months and now carries out conservation work around Abingdon, improving the environment, keeping fit and making new friends. Eleanor Dangerfield is the Abingdon Green Gym coordinator. She told the Journal: We work at Barton Fields and the Abbey fish ponds, as well as Ock Walk and the southern town car park. We could be cutting back scrub or bram- bles or making paths and working in differ- ent environments. It makes people healthier and they learn about the environment and different tools, as well as making new friends. Without BCTV it would have been quite difficult at the start, she added. Until October 19, Honda is donating 5 to BTCV for every test drive of the new Honda Insight hybrid car. Available at all participating Honda deal- erships across the UK and Northern Ireland, this fundraising initiative is part of Honda UK s Everyone Wants To Be Good campaign to promote the environmental benefits of the Honda Insight hybrid car and encourage volunteering on community environmental projects. BTCV s volunteering projects are a chance to get active, improve your fitness and wellbeing, and improve your local envi- ronment. They offer free sessions of practi- cal conservation activity, offering a chance to work-out in the great outdoors without a rowing machine in sight and learn tradi- tional skills with an experienced leader. Janet Ford, BTCV senior corporate part- nerships manager, said: Book your test drive today and help BTCV raise vital funds to work with even more volunteers on prac- tical environmental projects in local com- munities. To book your test drive, visit www.honda. co.uk/environment/do-it You can find details of environmental activities happening near you by visiting www.btcv.org or www.do-it.org or by calling the BTCV on 01302 388883. Sports project set up with 135,000 Big Lottery windfall is a real winner A PROJECT that encourages people with mental health problems to take part in sport has been declared a suc- cess after celebrating its first birthday. Activate was set up by Oxfordshire mental health charity Restore in 2008 NEWS BITES Museum birthday COGGES Manor Farm Museum will celebrate its 30th anniversary over the this bank holiday weekend. Events include a Shakespeare play, street ballads and a chance to meet Howie Watkins, former pre- senter of The Really Wild Show on Saturday. The following day visitors can bring a picnic to see Shakespeare s Merchant of Venice performed by Cambridge-based amateur dramatic society The Festival Players. On Monday, the Oxford Waits will give performances in period cos- tume from 2-3pm and will include dance and street ballads. For further information, call 01993 772602 or email cogges.manor oxfordshire.gov.uk after receiving 135,000 in funding from the Big Lottery. Workers organise free weekly activ- ities in Oxford, including table tennis, swimming and badminton, plus mountaineering and canoeing expe- ditions across the UK. More than 150 people have signed up for the scheme, with around 60 new people coming along to one or more session every week. Activate coordinator Kris Scott, who runs the scheme, said: Restore set up the project because they wanted to help people with mental health problems improve their fitness, and the response has been incredibly pos- itive. We have tried to make it accessible for everybody to come along and play. There is a proven link between health and improved mental health and it helps people with their self- esteem and gets them socialising. Although the service is offered to people across Oxfordshire, events are currently only being run in Oxford. People are referred to the service by social services, mental health groups or family and friends. Dave Lloyd, 47, who lives at the Simon House homelessness hostel in Oxford, admitted he had never taken part in any sports before. Since I started coming I have got out of myself and made a lot of new friends, he said. Paul Wood, 37, said that coming to Activate helped pull him out of a bout of depression in 2008. Just to play sport with people you have something in common with helps to bridge gaps, Paul said. Before, I was lacking in confidence but this has stretched and challenged me. Activate has enough funding to run for another two years and Kris Scott hopes it will become a permanent service for the county. We think we have made a very good case for follow-on funding, he said. To find out more about Activate, call Kris Scott on 07531 920106, email kris.scottrestore.org. or write to Kris Scott, activate coordinator, Restore, Manzil Way, Oxford, OX4 1YH. NEWS BITES New chairman OXFORDSHIRE county councillor David Robertson, who represents Witney, has been elected chairman of the South East England Regional Transport Board. Cllr Robertson is deputy leader of Oxfordshire County Council and takes over the role from Cllr Nick Skellett, who stepped down as chairman earlier this year. Mr Robertson was elected at the board s meeting in London. Tea-riffic event A CHARITY afternoon of cream teas, live music and lacemaking was hosted by David Wilson Retirement Homes in aid of the Wantage Community First Responders. The event, held at the Willow Grange retirement development, attracted nearly 100 residents and visitors who joined in with the activities, raising funds for the work of First Responders. Wantage First Responders Steve Smith said: The effort put in by the team at the development was fan- tastic and the money raised by the raffle will help us to continue to support the emergency services. Family fun day THE Museum of Oxford will host the High Days and Holidays Family Day on Saturday September 5. The event, which runs from 10am-5pm, includes a display of miniature fairground rides, and vis- itors can watch the fancy footwork of the Oxford City Morris Men, who will be performing in the afternoon. There is also the opportunity to take part in the museum s gallery crafts, which will place throughout the day.
