CROAT PARTIES Words Ben McCormick / Croatia has up-and-come into one of the world s hottest festival destinations, attracting revellers from all over Europe. BEN MCCORMICK looks into whats shaking on the Adriatic this summer. hisper it quietly, but it looks like Ibiza has a less expensive rival. For Europe s dedicated dance fans, the small fi shing village of Petrçanes sun-kissed beaches, cheap drinks and reasonably priced tickets are the answer to an empty wallet. Stop Making Sense (SMS) is billed as three days and nights of musical anarchy by the sea. Held on the full moon weekend from 12-14 August in Petrçane, SMS is stuffed to the gunwales with internationally renowned stars from the dance music world, including Joe Clausell, Danny Krivit, François K and Floating Points. And being by the sea, there s the added attraction of twice-daily boat parties as well. Also in Petrçane is the Garden Festival, held between 6-13 July. This year it features acts ranging from 70s disco legends Odyssey to Jurrasic5 s Chali2na and DJ sets from Art Department, Soul Clap, Appleblim and Sir Norman Jay. And there s also the prospect of two boat parties every day. Sounds terrible, doesn t it? Petrçane also hosts the Electric Elephant festival, which now stretches over fi ve days and nights and boasts a line-up that includes Derrick Carter, Horse Meat Disco, Gilles Peterson and Andrew Weatherall. Electric Elephant also has those seemingly-compulsory (and massively fun) boat parties. But it s not all about Petrçane. Outlook is held in an abandoned castle near Pula on 1-4 September and has boat parties galore, but if your sea legs aren t up to it there s plenty on dry land to get your feet moving, and your rib- cage rattling if this year s bill which includes Benga, Kode 9, Mala & Coki and Digital Mystikz is anything to go by. Hideout, held from 1 to 3 July on Pag Island s Zrce beach, is another where boat parties feature highly on the agenda of revellers (you can see a pattern emerging here, can t you?). This new arrival on the Croatia festival scene features performances from Sven Vath, Toddla T, 2ManyDJs, Ms Dynamite, Chase & Status and Shy FX.
