Is that why the albumʼs songs and lyrics almost sound almost world-weary? Definitely. This was not that long ago, about two years back. I remember at Big Chill at that time, I was working as a sushi waitress. That job was the last one I had, and it was horrendous! 12 hour days in a kimono! It really wasnʼt that long ago but life has definitely changed for the better since then. takes a little piece of you. Even on a practical level, I could be at home on my guitar, and could get a phone call asking if I had done this or done that, and i would be like, no, Iʼm trying to do my own thing here! Apart from the whole Bonobo thing. That is one where Iʼm absolutely comfortable to do a million collaborations with him. The more we work together, the better it gets! from m y tiny little demos, however they sounded at the time! Itʼs a bit like you bring the seed and that other person helps you nourish it, to grow into what itʼs meant to be. That separation is important, although it is still a marrying of the two ideas, but I came with the material... else? For years I just classed myself as a singer, but during that album it made me realise I love songwriting. It made me delve deeper into it and keep my ears open to learn more. Is it just a relief to finally get this album out there by itself to say I am Andreya by yourself, and how do you think people will find it? Yeah itʼs so nice. Itʼs been in the pipeline for a long while. Iʼm Maybe Iʼve been dragged around too many open-mics, but thereʼs such a mire of singer-songwriters Do you think that term excited but Iʼm also kind of scared because people are now going to form their opinions- everyone will have an opinion- whereas before I was so hidden. Some people will love it, and others will hate it. Ultimately, Simon and I have done the best that we could and really enjoyed the whole process and we love it. Thatʼs the most important thing. Despite what everyone else thinks of it, thatʼs the most important thing, so do what you will. I think one of the great things about debut albums, as we discussed, is that they are a has almost become a dirty word? No, I donʼt think so. It depends how you perceive it. I guess another way of putting it is that the role of the producer is to fill in the black and white line drawing that the songwriter provides. Simon Bonobo has really brought my sketch to life. After reading about that time of struggle and your string of crap jobs, I wondered whether ʻLost Where I Belongʼ was a comment on the process of the struggle to create? Absolutely! Itʼs basically saying that I know what I should be doing, I know that I should be a singer. I know Iʼm meant to be doing this, but I can still get lost and doubt myself and doubt my abilities. That song is basically summing it up. How do you tell whatʼs you and whatʼs Simon Bonobo in the record? I think ultimately it comes from me, just because there wasnʼt one of those songs that we started from nothing aand built it. It all came good document of the struggle to find that artistic identity, they capture it. What do you think you learnt about yourself in making it? I think I found out that Iʼm very determined and very resourceful. What You had quite a significant profile even then, from doing, amongst other things, the Flying Lotus and Bonobo collaborations. How does your solo identity relate to how you worked in collaboration? I think it all goes hand in hand. Each collaboration has helped me figure out what I want to do as a songwriter, but it didnʼt define me if thatʼs what you mean. I think itʼs good to have that definite line.
