FOB MEANWHILE, IN AUSTRIA... MODERN USAGE The Hashtag From the Editors Desk: In the course of putting this issue together a writer posed the question, Is it acceptable to use a hashtagged phrase in a piece of print writing? With respect to strict grammarians (whom I politely refer to the response given in Arkell v Pressdram), I had no hesitation in answering an emphatic, Yes. The rise of the hashtag on Twitter is one of the more pleasing developments in written language of our times, showing our flexibility and opening new channels in an age where the problem of conveying tone on the internet has led to all manner of misunderstandingsand its use for meta-commentary provides the writer with a zestful alternative to the overly relied upon parentheses. Besides, no less illustrious a home of writing standards, the great New Yorker, recently published a brief piece by the renowned Susan Orlean on the joy and possibilities of using the hashtag in communication beyond Twitter. If its good enough for such titans of linguistic rectitude, its good enough for us. Id rather people didnt start pronouncing it in conversation, however. #peoplewhopronounceohem shouldbeshotatdawn INSPIRATIONS WANT OF THE MONTH: with a varsity? So a la mode! The images themselves are also beautiful, faintly desaturated; as a report on college life alone it is a delight. Happily for those of us without a spare grand to spunk on a book (we cant all be style bloggers, can we), the good folk at powerHouse books have just published a translated version of this unassuming, candid joy of a book. It is a literal translation, in fact; part of its charms come from the earnest, slightly bemused original commentary. Many Ivy League universities prohibit students from owning automobiles. Do they go on a date to a bicycle, I wonder? the book asks at one point, beneath images cycling, smoking and blue sports jackets. The meaning of freedom can be found in what students wear at their residential campuses. The pleasures of style and photography can be found in the pictures in Take Ivy.--MCL TAKE IVY The original Take Ivy book is an object of cult fascination, bordering on fetishism, to a certain kind of individual (for want of a better pejorative, lets call them style bloggers). Published in 1965 by Fujingahosha, a venerable Japanese publishing house, it holds the results of photographer Teruyoshi SpringFest takes place in Graz, Austrias second largest city, UNESCO world heritage site and birthplace of Austrias most famous export Arnold Schwarzenegger. The four-day festival was laid out across a series of interesting venues including the Postgarage, a dingy club with gold walls in the dodgy end of town (to get there you have to pass boarded up brothels, shabby gay bars and threadbare shops) and the ruins of an old castle situated above a GIANT CAVE. Minimal supergroup Moderat began proceedings, playing an open air concert at the Schlossberg, the ruins of the historical castle on the mountain that overlooks the city. It really was incredible, with the German trio creating wonderful soundscapes that fitted the atmospheric venue perfectly and whetted everyones appetite for the next three days. Several hundred metres down, people queued for hours to party at the Dom im Berg, an enormous cave carved inside the mountain and transformed in to a nightclub complete with awesome soundsystem. Here was the place to catch big names including DJ Hell, Noze, Breakbot, Shadow Dancer Erol Alkan and Drums of Death, the latters voodoo face paint being the perfect fit for this manic and surreal environment. But it wasnt all banging techno and hard raving. Daytimes can be spent absorbing the citys culture; Graz homes Europes largest armoury and modern art museum the Kunsthaus. Another strength of this festival was that it was possible to catch acts that covered the entirety of the electronic music spectrum. The Orpheum played host to the Moriz Von Oswald Trio, who performed an improvised set which developed from something fairly organic to an aural frenzy. This sudden explosion of sound and energy surprised most people who had previously written them off as looking like geography teachers let it be known that DJs can also rock leather elbow patches. Another live set at this old theatre from Kruder and Dorfmeister was highly 034 / Notion 000 planetnotion SPRING FEST Considering its the country that gave the world both Mozart and Falco, and Ultravox wrote a moody song about its capital city, its really no surprise that Austria is fast becoming synonymous with fantastic festivals. Kara Simsek headed up and in to - the mountains and found that these hills really are alive with the sound of music. Hayashidas tour of the eight Ivy League colleges at the end of one semester. Original copies go for up to $1,500 on eBay (where do style bloggers get their money?!); flicking through, its easy to see why: the book is an unbelievably beautiful documentary of classic prep style (as well as an historical message in a bottle). Whats more amazing is how now so much of this looks. Suit shorts, patent leather pumps and white ankle socks anticipated and certainly met peoples expectations: many called it the pinnacle of the entire festival.-KS HOLLY MIRANDA BY DAISY LOWE FRIENDS LIKE THESE N OTION 047 / 2010 / UK 3.65 US$9.99 / AUS $13.50 T H E B R I L L I A N T N E W Y O R K A N T I - F O L K S T A R M I S S H O L LY M I R A N D A S T Y L E D B Y H E R D E A R F R I E N D , T H E B E A U T I F U L M I S S D A I S Y L O W E PLUS FREE IN DARE TO TRANSFORM NEW STYLE CONNECTION surface shifting stylers Unleash your creativity.
