NOISIA SPILT THE ATOM VISION / DIVISION RECORDS / DRUM N BASS If youre just discovering drum and bass music, youll have probably heard the Juan Maclean DJ KICKS !K7 / DANCE/ELECTRO name Noisia pop up in the not too distant vicinity. Hollands finest export of dnb monsters, this popular threesome chipped away at the dance community for years, releasing droves of EPs and singles through the scenes biggest outlets until their frighteningly powerful screams were heard. So its a great pleasure to announce their debut album. Split The Atom is a highly polished record that represents love, passion and hard work. It contains many of Noisias popular singles from throughout the years, such as a reworked vocal on the spacey, wall-crashing realization of My World and jungle-tinged banger Red Heat. Noisia have taken their years of knowledge, painstaking attention to detail and ear for solid breaks and crafted an album that vies for the big time - whilst keeping one foot planted firmly within the underground. Fortunately, theyre following the same path as fellow drum cohorts Pendulum (not a whiff of Synth-meets- corporate-nu-metal-and- lingering here). Noisia have made an album that will satisfy hardcore heads whilst opening up to new audiences in equal measure. It contains less of the mechanical, hydraulic pace that made Noisia such a scary prospect in the first place, but with twisting, genre-spanning surprises like lead single Machine Gun. If drum and bass needs new heroes at the forefront of musical depravity, then let this new, insightful and boundary tipping album be proof that Noisia are the proud leaders of the revolution. But then again, they always have been...so wake the fuck up. JG It seems that anyone at home can make their own mix, whether theyre a proper DJ or not. Which begs the question, why bother putting them out at this point? As a mission statement for a new addition to !K7s popular and revered DJ Kicks series, its not exactly inspiring. However, this confrontational opening gambit gets John Juan Maclean riled, and determined to prove that it is still worth bothering to create DJ mixes. Not many DJs could put together a mix like Maclean for a start. LCD Soundsystems somewhat underrated DFA labelmate has been creating slightly techier and harder-edge electro since the labels inception almost a decade ago. With this mix album, hes come up with a rather brilliant addition to the series, which blends house roots tunes with the crème de la crème of the modern global techno scene. Though bookended by two very different versions of seminal Juan Maclean track Happy House (tricksily retitled to Feliz Casa), this is no vanity project either. Hes pulled together tracks from across the globe; classic house tunes like Rick Wilhites Get On Up! and recent disco cuts from Shit Robot, Still Going and 6th Borough Project intermingle deliciously, while a smattering of European tech- house artists like Florian Meindl and Alex Niggemann adds a little Berlin edge. As a proper DJ, Maclean has not only selected a bunch of brilliant tracks, but hes mixed within the songs themselves; this isnt just a compilation of his favourite tunes of the moment, but a full-on live mix with Maclean scything up track structures, vocals and beats alike to create something genuinely new. He might have spent the majority of his time prepping this mix worrying about the relevance of DJ mixes in 2010, but Macleans efforts were clearly not in vain. Anyone can make their own mix, but it takes skill and knowledge, as well as treading a line between pure entertainment and artistic principles, to create something worth listening to more than once. Youll definitely get your moneys worth with this one. SL Bodi Bill 2 IN1 SINNBUS / ELECTRONICA Three piece Bodi Bill has produced an accomplished, mature album which showcases the true variety of styles that the band can produce. The edgy, emotive, folksy techno sound is by no means mainstream or to most peoples taste, but the latest of three very good albums from the band, deserves them to be more well known. Gold Blood HUMAN SHIELD / ELECTRO TWILIGHT LANGUAGE EP The album shifts effortlessly from moody techno in Be Home Before Dinner to gentle, uplifting vocals in Depart Tropical, a standout track on the album. Songs such a Head In My Hands and Henry demonstrate that although Bodi Bill can create some club ready techno bangers, they can also write truly beautiful, clever lyrics. The relaxed uplifting vocals shift to a hungrier, angrier tone in One or Two Ghosts set on wonky percussion and spooky organ chords. This band sum up everything that about why Germany (Berlin in particular) is at the forefront of European music at the moment and is the hotbed for new electronic music. Just one listen to this album and you realise that while it does have a distinctive Berlin feel, it is more accomplished and mature than other similar albums from the past year. Its an exciting album, which will hopefully gain the German trio the recognition they deserve outside their country and see them playing Europe-wide very soon. CM I like electro is a phrase thrown around by plenty of trendy twats who dont know their Model 500 from their Modeselektor. Well, Id like to see these twats come face to face with the mighty Gold Blood who quite simply destroy all comers with their REAL electro. Slurred opener Dont Waste My Time oozes like a slug across a razorblade. Its compelling yet challenging, the opening bars being a bit T.Raumschmiere before exploding in to layered vocals - think Regan from The Exorcist fronting a cyberpunk band. Singer Emile Bojesen howls over the disjointed rhythm of Hair, a track which jerks like a millipede in a strobe light; its Trent Reznor-lite for people whose idea of industrial is a computer lab in a stark white building manned by men in bulletproof uniforms with snarling Alsatians at the end of chains. The reason I love this band is because listening to them I know that they love my favourite bands as much as me. Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Depeche Mode, Clan of Xymoxm even a smattering of London After Midnight... their doomy mix of synth and snares is a breath of fresh air for a genre raped and dominated by faceless pussies with videos full of fake tanned wretches and oversized sunglasses.
