Dealing with the same subject matter in an arguably more refined manner, The Last Station, starring such Hollywood illuminati as James McAvoy, was released earlier this year. Based on the biography of the same name by Jay Parini, The Last Station is largely faithful to the narrative of 1910 but marginalises Tolstoys riveting spiritual ideals and inner torment in favour of a classic story on love and life without it. There is little sense that Tolstoys philosophies, which director Michael Hoffman treats as being largely irrational and absurd, would go onto be an inspiration to such key 20th Century thinkers as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. However the film is successful for the most part in the sense that it clearly achieves its aims as a pretty, emotionally wrought period drama but one is left wondering how much more striking the film could have been given the kaleidoscopic spiritual ramifications of Tolstoys final days. A NEW FORM OF WRITING WILL BE NECESSARY. I HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT AND I CAN FEEL WHAT IS COMING. and promiscuous ethos begins to disintegrate as hes diagnosed with terminal cancer. Shot on then revolutionary digital technology in a whirlwind, no production value style, Ivansxtc is a visually interesting and arresting work, whilst not reaching the cathartic zenith of the novella. His latest film The Kreutzer Sonata, adapted from one of Tolstoys final novellas, will hopefully follow in the same vain; assimilating the spirit of his novels whilst not feeling indebted to their often tricky Unlike Hoffman, British filmmaker Bernard Rose is a full-blooded Tolstoyan. Nevertheless, his first adaptation of Tolstoys work, 1997s Anna Karenina, was an unmitigated disaster. Plagued by producer pressures, budget cuts and language issues, the result was a beautiful but rushed and worryingly incoherent film that reflects little of the novels spirit. Deeply unsatisfied with the final result, and armed with a vendetta against Hollywood, Rose began writing an adaptation of Tolstoys greatest short story, The Death Of Ivan Illych. Updating the novella to a modern setting Ivansxtc concerns a big-shot producer whose materialistic narrative structures. As Tolstoy said, cinema has divined the mystery of motion. And that is greatness. Of the huge number of Tolstoy encranisations (Anna Karenina has been adapted to the screen 19 times), Robert Bressons LArgent is one of the few films that comes closest to the aesthetic level of the source material. Loosely based on the first part of Tolstoys short story The Forged Banknote, an austere story of escalating sin, Bresson treats the material in his renowned ascetic style. THE KREUTZER SONATA IS OUT ON DVD ON 26 APRIL THROUGH AXIOM FILMS Through the repetition and rhythm of images, and his signature no emotion acting style, Bresson masterfully builds towards the murderous climax of the narrative that he treats, rightfully, as unspectacularly as the films humble opening. The work would be, sadly, Bressons last contribution to cinema but LArgent is a fitting tribute to the Tolstoyan spirit that Bresson, as a Catholic, regarded so highly. Adapting any great authors work to the screen is always going to be hugely problematic. Not only does one feel obliged, perhaps wrongly, to cater to the literary experts and avid readers but has to translate literature, an artistic form that finds its expression through the medium of symbols, to the direct image and aural systems of the cinema. With a writer such as Tolstoy, whose reputation as one of the greatest artists of his time borders on axiomatic, the pressures on the adapter are ten fold. However as Bernard Rose has proved, within the digital revolution and the promise of more economically viable film productions, there is still scope for Tolstoys work to penetrate the publics consciousness through the shadowy screen and the cold machine of the cinema. --JAMIE POWELL MUSIC .
