BATMAN: ASSASSINS CREED 2 WORDS DAN PHILLIPS The original Assassins Creed was a missed opportunity. A showcase for cutting edge graphics and animation, it failed to properly deliver its original ambition of a crusader era sleuth-em- up: unnecessary curtailments on player agency left a sour aftertaste and the visually compelling environments of ancient Holy Land cities were largely devoid of enough activity to warrant interest. MODERN WARFARE 2 WORDS DAN PHILLIPS The sequel goes to considerable lengths to remedy this. Relocated to Renaissance Italy, the game now concerns Ezio Auditore, a descendant of the original anti hero, Altair. The shift in time and perspective is an unusually LEFT 4 DEAD 2 WORDS JAMES BASSETT The original Left 4 Dead was that rarest of things: a video game that possessed no obvious weaknesses. It was a perfectly balanced, well-rounded, squad-based first person shooter with scares, thrills and laughs. Possibly the safest pair of development hands around, its troubled many that Valve seemed to have taken L4D down the Call of Duty route of needlessly updated cash cows with this sequel. It turns out there was absolutely no need to worry. The core game mechanic is untouched after all, Valve are smart enough to know not to tinker too much. You play one of four survivors of a zombie holocaust. Theyve also spotted areas of improvement that few others would noticed. Realising that well-coordinated groups could breeze through the original, almost all of Valves changes attempt to tilt the advantage back in favour of the zombies. The new types of special infected are all intended to shake well-oiled groups out of their tight formations. The spitter sends players scattering with well-placed gobs of acidic goo, the presence of a charger turns a narrow choke point from a relatively safe haven into a place of genuine danger by threatening to carry survivors away from their chums, while the jockey leaps on the back of isolated players and forces them stagger into large groups of zombies. To make things slightly easier for the survivors, the arsenal has been expanded from the miserly five guns available in the original, and different varieties of ammo are now available. Theres also a whole load of melee weapons which can be carried in lieu of the standard infinite-ammo pistol. The choice forces the player to think about the situational usefulness of each item rather than as before simply consider do I have one of these yet? Plus caving in a zombies head in with a cricket bat is awesome. So, yes: Valve justify the 2 on the end and charging 40 quid. Infinity Wards mega sequel to 2007s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare certainly makes itself known as soon as you start playing; a cacophony of bombast and spectacle, the single player game rockets between set pieces with bravado. The sheer audio-visual force of the campaign is something to be reckoned with; gun battles erupt explosively in clouds of bullet casings, sparks, debris and grenade smoke in some of the most expansive and spectacular environments committed to silicone. effective one because it embodies and contextualises much of the changes to the core gameplay. While Altair was an outsider drifting through towns he had no connection to, Ezio is a nobleman and feels at home in Florence, Venice and Rome. The games side quests, by extension, are compelling and fun to the point where the main quest can be ignored wholesale for hours. Ezio is a stronger character too, with a compelling classical revenge tale motivating the player far better than the more abstract kill one to save thousands mantra of the previous game. Unfortunately, the high fidelity presentation cant fully mask the creaking game mechanics under the hood. Continuing the formula established in Call of Duty, the campaign features hordes of unintelligent, identikit enemies that constantly respawn in key positions until you physically push forward and trigger the next wave in a new space. Post-Halo 3 it all feels a bit old hat; knowing how the illusion is created quickly ruins any sense of tension or achievement. The plot, too, is totally ridiculous: part Tom Clancy, mostly lurid Michael Bay wet-dream. This sits ill at ease with the games one stab at seriousness, the now infamous No Russian terrorist level, which in context feels like cheap shock tactics. Multiplayer, on the other hand, has gone from strength to strength. The innovative perk system from CoD4 returns, massively expanded and bringing all kinds of new tactical depth to the table. The players ability to tailor the game to a huge variety of play styles is unrivalled and the chaos and variety this brings out minute by minute in each game is brilliant. An entirely new arsenal and map-set with lavish killstreak awards brings the freshness, which should keep newcomers and CoD4 veterans alike hooked. Although much of the tedium has been removed, Assassins Creed 2 still struggles with its execution. Combat is still fairly dull and using Ezios dramatic acrobatic skills to escape is not a choice of preserving your life, but your patience. The game is also too hesitant to give you much freedom when it counts. Key character assassinations, as before, are orchestrated action sequences with too many cut scenes when all you want to do is employ the games accomplished stealth system to make a kill on your own terms and walk away unseen. Its hard not to recommend, though. Despite a few rough edges its fun to play and a fizzing, lively script keeps things interesting in one of the seasons most polished games. 096 / Notion MUSIC .
