Black Canvas RISE COOL AND DEADLY DUB/REGGAE If you like dub to rattle your rib cage, then this is not for you.com. If, however, youre a laid- back-in-the-shack type of rasta, then this is definitely one for you and your chalise. Black Canvas are the latest addition to bass-veteran Tayos Cool and Deadly label, and Rise embodies Mista Melody and Rider Shafiques conscious views on moral conundrums, life, love and spirituality. They toy with a variety of genres that include straight-up reggae, dubstep and d n b. One track that tickled our fancy was Broken Dreams, produced by Chase and Status, injected with their signature fast-paced wobbly basslines, topped with catchy chords that showcase Melody an Shafiques more energetic flow. With far-out Eastern jam style flutes and bongo drums, the self-produced tracks are basic in terms of technicality, but pleasing to the soul. Check out reggae power ballad, My Life - it has everything from trumpets to a rain stick! Lyrically, these guys have a certain depth that is linked to their spiritual connections, and the tune, Babylon is testament to this; we only wish they had selected a more original sample, instead of relying on cult yardie gangster flick, Rockers to set the tone. Guest vocals from Monique Smith add an extra quality to tunes like Let Love Be and the dramatic string mash- up, Once Again. Overall there is a slight element of cheesiness to this album that, whilst good in places, occasionally shouts Gouda! from the top of the dub dairy. HJ BBE MISH-MASH Dj Vadim U CANT LURN IMAGINASHUN Summer 2008. DJ Vadim is diagnosed with ocular melanoma cancer of the eye. Leaving him completely blind in the left eye, a precarious operation is carried out to remove the tumour. Thankfully, the operation is successful. Summer 2009 rolls around. U Cant Lurn Imaginashun is unleashed. Its classic Vadim. Theres roots-reggae in the form of mid- tempo head-shaker, Soldier (featuring powerful vocals from 5Nizza). Theres straight-up hip hop in You Are Yours, which sees super-fly Yarah Bravo on fierce form. There are the songs that ooze soul; salacious after-hours slow jam, Saturday coolly moonwalks around you and smothers you in auto-tuned happiness. And of course, there are those intricate instrumentals full of deep drums and groove-laden melodies. Just point your ears in the direction of Thrill 103. Something within Vadim has changed, though. Whilst everything weve come to appreciate and love from the DJ is here, making the album predictably dope, theres a whole other dimension that is entirely unfamiliar. More specifically: a dark, poignant tone. Beijos, a slow, affecting, piano-led song featuring Heidi Vogels breathlessly eerie vocals possesses a forlorn, dreamlike quality. And Game Tight takes you on a vast, sonic journey, through waves of sinister synths and large, emphatic beats, all bathed in golden, shimmering sunlight. This is new. This is Vadim making music youve never heard him make before. And its beautiful. Rather than let the trauma of the past year stifle his boundless creativity, the Russian producer has clearly drawn inspiration from it. Hes probed the darkest corners of his mind, culminating in what is his most eclectic, personal work so far. With so many moods and styles to accommodate, Vadim has deftly crafted a long-player that plays organically and seamlessly from start to finish. Its full of heart, exactly the way music should be. IH Cicada ROULETTE CRITICAL MASS DISCO Critics have long said theres something that differentiates Cicadas electro-tinged dance. And I propose it is this. The vocals. Cicada has them. REAL vocals. One Beat Aways hard dance Cut Copy-lite dub, peppered with a wailing guitar riff on repeat, is a great example: a big beat with washes of synth that stands up as a respectable sexy house track on its own, is haunted with Heidrun Bjornsdottirs whispy Ladytron-sounding voice, describing all the trappings of love, nasal and soft. Youre only one beat away from my heart, she sings, before the chorus, Oh, oh, oh, oh. Like a love-sick wolf, howling at the moon, Oh, oh, oh, oh, she howls. The voice, and the sentiment behind the diatribe to love, are undoubtedly rich, Depeche Mode-like in their brutality. Talking too - its vocals are a sea of beautiful cracks, painfully reminiscing about the trappings of lost love. I love you, the singer caterwauls in a broken drawl. He is a walking scar. A permanently wounded beast. The vocals help listeners engage the heart as well as the legs. Its this that separates Cicada. They have the spitball lyrical wit of indie. The gloss of pop. The breakbeat of electro. It is only when the tracks are void of vocals, like P Stars glossy knob-twiddling percussion, reminiscent of early Daft Punk, that the music suffers from its slick, multi-referenced hybrid: too off-kilter for the trancemasters at Mixmag; too commercial for the Dalston dancefloors. Almost like if Pnau and Linus Loves ran Ministry of Sound... maybe thats not such a bad thing! HK Ghost FREEDOM OF THOUGHT BREAKIN BREAD HIP HOP Slow Club SO YEAH MOSHI MOSHI FOLK/INDIE-POP UK producer Ghost is making music you just dont hear anymore. Freedom Of Thought, harks back to a not-so-long-ago decade where lush, atmospheric soundscapes layered over crisp, boom-bap beats ruled supreme. A time when Shadow and Krush were putting out records on the legendary Mo Wax label. A time when Ninja Tune was just starting to establish itself. Freedom Of Thought is, simply put, reliably good music. The Shadow comparison is clear; on first listen Ghosts production style is similar to that of the Californian pioneer, circa 1996s seminal Entroducing. Mostly crafted using an MPC, Freedom Of Thought features deft sampling of both eerie, expansive instrumentation as well as snappy, live-sounding drums frequently used by not only Shadow, but Cut Chemist, RJD2 and Sixtoo too. Zoom in though, and youll find live synthesisers in-between the various samples. Elevate is beautiful, ambient hip hop with a cascading piano in freefall, powerful, cosmic synths, and Jehsts stream-of-consciousness rhyming. Freedom Of Thought is highly varied, taking you through a whole gamut of emotions and styles. At a time where the amped-up cool of hipster rap dominates, this is the perfect shot of music to send you drifting. Not just good, but great. IH This elegantly named Sheffield duo are supposedly fantastic live: playing cutlery as if they cannot afford instruments. They emerge at the tail-end of wonky pop, and the close of the latest folk/whimsical indie resurgence - it never really goes away. Folk-pop is a well-worked furrow, a difficult one in which to make a mark; see equally talented bands like The Bicycle Thieves queuing to get signed. In places, Slow Club make a mark, such as the youthful promises to avoid aging lonely on When I Go. Its gentle addressing of bigger issues is like explaining the Middle Eastern problem using Play Doh, which is quite an achievement. Because were Dead packs a kooky punch, and the You dont have to be Beautiful jig is an inspiring skip, but its less a case of could try harder, and more dont try so hard. Its dinner party indie; ultimately, it drifts past so easily that if you stop concentrating, youll miss it. Much that it pains us, So Yeah, should really be So What. TH
