SOUNDS LIKE DVD / W ARNER M USIC E NTERTAINMENT / TEEN R ELEASED 14 TH S EPTEMBER SPIRIT In an entirely different portrayal of fame, Jamie Johnsons hilarious documentary Sounds Like Teen Spirit goes behind the scenes at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. It follows contestants from Belgium, Bulgaria, Georgia and Cyprus as they prepare for the big final in Rotterdam. They could actually have called it Kids say the most tragically endearing things, as theyre all basically rubbish and none of them stand a chance of winning. However, this doesnt really seem to matter, as the film is more of a celebration of trying, failing and having fun than anything else. My favourite character is Laurens, a gangly 15-year-old from Ypres, who is five times the size of all the other contestants. Hes a bit like a real-life Napoleon Dynamite and is surely the horniest person ever to appear in a U certificate movie. THE CINEMA IMAGINARIUM / L IONSGATE OF / DOCTOR R ELEASED PARNASSUS 16 TH O CTOBER Fame can also have its darker side. For a start theres the very real danger that it will turn you into a cock, like Michael McIntyre. In extreme cases, it can even kill you. This (possibly) is definitely what happened to Heath Ledger who inconveniently died from an overdose of sleeping pills during the filming of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Director Terry Gilliams solution to this tragic setback was to rope in Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to sub in for him like some kind of WWF tag team. Although this is quite an elegant solution to the problem and is very artfully done, it does demonstrate just how fucking good an actor Heath Ledger was, and what a tragedy it is that he passed away. It also demonstrates just what a fucking bad actor Jude Law is, and what tragedy it is hes still alive. The film is all about the power of the imagination. Parnassus (Greek mythology fans will know) was the home of the Muses and source of all poetic inspiration. Doctor Parnassus, a kind of entertainer-cum-philoso travels the world trying to set peoples imaginations free. He does this by inviting you to pass through an enchanted mirror into a fantastic wonderland thats kind of like a cross between Narnia, Second Life and Super Mario World. Im not sure if any of that last paragraph made sense. Neither does the film really, but then I dont think its especially meant to. Its like an extended version of those amazingly surreal animations Terry Gilliam used to do for Monty Python - I was actually half expecting the film to end with everyone being squashed by a giant foot. In a way, that wouldve been quite a nice send-off for old Heath... P ITIFUL W HINING A BOUT A LL T HINGS F ILM ... Staying on the fame theme, the topic of this months rant is nepotism. Ive seen a few films recently which, after a spot of casual Wikipedia-ing, have turned out to have been directed by someone with a famous parent. The most recent of these was Moon by Duncan Jones, the son of David Bowie. Admittedly this was excellent, but Im not going to let inconvenient facts get in the way of my argument. As a rule, Im always pretty wary of anything done by someone with famous parents. Becoming a film director is apparently really hard; first you have to stump up thousands and thousands of pounds to go to film school, and even then theres no guarantee youll have any success. This does mean however that, if someone is in the position to get a film made in the first place, it should at least be vaguely tolerable. The children of the famous, on the other hand, seem to play by a different set of rules and are allowed to have a go at any vocation or art-form that takes their fancy, irrespective of how mindcrushingly awful the results are. Anyone whos ever been exposed to the journalism of Peaches Geldof will know what Im talking about here. Maybe Im just jealous because my dads a Deputy Head and therefore has precisely zero influence in helping me get my biopic of Graeme Le Saux green- lit. Then again, maybe Angelina Jolie is jealous of me? Maybe all she ever wanted was to be a Deputy Head of a failing Bristol comprehensive but, lacking the family connections, was forced to become a millionaire film star instead. Its possible.
