Q&A Red Hat Virtualisation Walli Datoo Senior Product Manager for Open Source Software, Interactive Ideas We talk to Walli Datoo, Senior product manager for open source software at Interactive Ideas, about the virtualisation technology in-built in Red Hats Ad- vanced Platform and why this can be of huge benefit to a reseller. test patches or software upgrades on virtual systems before a general roll out. Virtualisation also allows you to decrease unplanned downtime with reliable, cost- effective disaster recovery. How will Red Hat products tackle the issues of virtualisation management? With the release of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualisation Hypervisor (RHEV-H) in Q3 2009 and the acquisition of Qumranet (pioneers of Kernel-based Virtual Machine or KVM), Red Hat have inherited management tools that will allow users to make use of industry-standard tools to migrate, schedule, power save, maintain and manage images both for server and desktop virtualisation, allowing customers ease of use when deploying virtualisation within their infrastructure. The Red Hat Virtualisation Manager (RHVM) for Server and Desktop Management will be released in 2009 in conjunction with the new hypervisor. What does Red Hats partnership with Microsoft on virtualisation mean for potential users? Both Microsoft and Red Hat realised quickly that the hypervisor technology was essentially replicating the Operation System model for hardware emulation. The logical step was to integrate the technology into the OS and make it mainstream. The two leading providers of OS in the world, Microsoft and Red Hat, both have integrated virtualisation technology with cross- platform certification. When Microsoft launched Windows NT 4.0 they decided to integrate the TCP/IP network technology because it was inherent to server communication and network technology. Today, the internet and high-capacity networks are where they are due to the rapid expanse of networking on the OS. The agreement is particularly significant with the new Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) emerging from Red Hats acquisition of Qumranet. This effectively allows companies to roll out thin clients running desktops in a centralised environment, easing management and data migration within IT infrastructure. Red Hat have no intention to tap into the mainstream desktop market. Essentially, cross- certification of MS Windows XP, Vista allows consumers to run MS desktop platforms for their staff, running on a stable and tested Red Hat backend server seamlessly. What is the future for virtualisation? Virtualisation is transforming the way organisations deploy and manage IT resources. By helping them more efficiently utilise hardware, software and personnel, virtualisation enables them to build infrastructures that are flexible, scalable and most importantly economical as they strive to become truly agile businesses. Red Hat is in an unparalleled position to deliver comprehensive virtualisation for customers. Leveraging a strong ecosystem of hardware and software partners, the Company is focused on breaking down barriers to reliable, large-scale virtualisation deployment. The integration of virtualisation in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 has established Red Hat as a leading provider of commercial-quality open source virtualisation. Finally, briefly tell us why a reseller should look to partner with Red Hat? Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is the markets leading open source operating system which integrates virtualization technology. Your customers will be looking at ways to reduce cost and do more with less resources. Virtualisation offers them the opportunity to reduce hardware and operational costs. It also improves their agility by giving them the flexibility to vary server capacity and performance according to demand. Is virtualisation really only useful for server consolidation? Although the core element of virtualisation is server consolidation, there are many different uses of virtualisations within an IT Infrastructure. Some of the ways you could use virtualisation are as follows... Saving physical space. As a rule, server rooms dont grow along in sync with demands from the business. Unless the entire company is considering an office move, IT departments will have to work within their given space, despite increases in demand. Its obvious that replacing Virtualisation is transforming the way organisations deploy and manage resources four servers with one more powerful server is going to free up space. Many firms turning to virtualisation will look at moving to blade servers at the same time to maximise space savings. Reduced hardware costs are another advantage. In the example of four under-utilised systems, all could be migrated to one server of the same specifications and still have adequate resources thats at 25 per cent of the current hardware cost. Reduced power consumption and need for cooling are benefits which come hand in hand. While the power consumption and heat output of a system with high levels of utilisation will be greater than that of a system under a lesser load, the consolidation of multiple low-load systems should still produce less heat and demand less power overall. The ability to rapidly deploy a new system without ordering new hardware, building/ installing the server, and updating firmware can be a big time saver for sys admins (whose time is usually at a premium). IT managers and system administrators are required to apply patches and updates on both desktops and mission-critical systems. Most of the time they dont want to apply patches to a live system in case theres a problem. Virtualisation allows IT managers to apply and Meet Walli Name Walli Datoo Job Title Senior Product Manager for Open Source Software Tel 020 8805 2999 Email wallidinteractiveideas Meet Red Hat and Interactive on stand 809 at the VM Expo on the 7th & 8th October www.testdriveinteractiv 0208 805 2999 Autumn 2009 er resell uide g solution p 6 Red Hat Virtualisation Discover the benefits of the virtualisation technology in-built in Red Hats Advanced Platform p 21 Opportunities p 18 Test Drive in a downturn Product Locator Find out why the IT sector is emerging fit and strong from the damaging rece Spend less, do more with JBoss. 4 earn how in our JBoss Enterprise L Application webinar series. www.jboss.com/promo/JEA Copyright 2009 Red Hat, Inc.
